In 1904 Thomas Noble Foulis set up a publishing company in Frederick Street, Edinburgh which, over the next ten years, became well-known for producing a series of highly original, beautifully illustrated books under the TN Foulis imprint.

The more expensive books were bound in a special jute buckram from Dundee or with fine quality vellum. Most titles came with paper boards, which was actually wallpaper, dyed to Foulis' own specifications. These covers have proved extremely hard wearing and many copies around today are in very good condition.

T.N. Foulis publications often had a distinctly Scottish flavour and some featured attractive colour illustrations. Their 'envelope books' were aimed at the gift market - a cross between a book and a greetings card that would fit neatly into an envelope - and proved extremely popular.

The Mitchell Library has a collection of over 250 books published by T.N. Foulis.
