Captain Marvel succumbs to cancer that he acquired from exposure to Compound 13 while battling Nitro in Captain Marvel #34. His friends and enemies pay their respects.
- One notable absence among the mourners is Carol Danvers, who learns about the death in Marvel Fanfare #24.
- The Silver Surfer is a Skrull espionage agent named Bartak. He impersonated Devil-Slayer during the heroes' vigil with their friend, but had to change to the Surfer—whom he knew was trapped on Earth—when the real Devil-Slayer arrived.[1]
- Novak is credited as James Novak.
- There is a secret cameo of Superman in a group shot of the final page, identified by the unique hairstyle and his boots and cape seen below. Future reprints haven't edited him out of the classic image. This cameo still remains a mystery as Clark Kent is known to be only an unpowered human reporter on Earth-616.
