Mega Man X DiVE

Time Rift redirects here. This article is about Mega Man X DiVE, which was renamed Time Rift in China. You may be looking for the cancelled mobile game Rockman XZ: Time Rift.

Mega Man X DiVE, known as Rockman X DiVE (ロックマンX DiVE Rokkuman Ekkusu Daivu) in Taiwan and Japan, is an action-platforming video game in the Mega Man X series developed by Capcom Taiwan for iOS, Android, and Steam. The game stars the Player themself as they use Hunter Programs to help the newcomers RiCO and ViA fight glitches in a vast database of Mega Man X data, known as the Deep Log.

History

Mega Man X DiVE was first accessible in a closed beta test from September 12-16, 2019. It was fully released in non-Japan Asian countries (Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, and Cambodia) for iOS and Android on March 24, 2020.[2] A Japanese version of the game was launched on October 26, 2020 with a new server, and published by Capcom Mobile JP.[3]

Early access for the global version, published by NebulaJoy, was released on June 30, 2021 in the United States and United Kingdom.[4] The full global version was released in the US, UK, Canada, and Ireland on August 16, 2021,[5] and in Europe and Latin America on November 2021.[6] Finally, the game was released on Steam in Asian countries on September 15, 2021, and in global countries on January 20, 2022.[7][8][9]

The two Asian versions of Mega Man X DiVE ended their online services on September 27, 2023, while the global version continued to receive updates until its service ended on July 30th 2024.[10]. An official offline version titled Mega Man X DiVE Offline was released on Steam on September 1, 2023.

In 2024, due to localization requirements in China, X DiVE was rebranded as Rockman: Time Rift (洛克人: 时空裂隙) to remove English words from the title (DiVE), utilizing the name from the cancelled Rockman XZ: Time Rift that NebulaJoy still owned. [11]

Story

Mega Man X DiVE is a metanarrative, as the Player themselves are an acknowledged participant in the story. The game is set in a cyberspace database called the Deep Log, which contains data from all games in the Mega Man series, along with the experiences of players all around the world. After decades of this database being managed by a mysterious administrator, they disappeared, letting corruption and other errors thrive in the form of Irregular Data.

The game begins with RiCO, the latest administrator of the Deep Log, welcoming the Player and enlisting their help in clearing up the glitches plaguing the database. The Player uses Hunter Programs to clear out Irregular Data, discovering a host of new glitched entities as well. ViA mysteriously resembles Zero and saves the Player from powerful Irregular Data, though he holds a dark secret. iCO is a doppelganger of RiCO who uses Irregular Data to test the Player's strength before she can trust them with a new mission. This is to correct the three siblings Droitclair, Angepitoyeir, and Eratoeir, who are foreigners to the Mega Man franchise. Upon defeating Erato, she reveals that the Robot Destroy Program (a.k.a. the Maverick Virus) has infected the Deep Log and is the source of the Irregular Data. RiCO soon discovers that ViA has become the manifestation of the Robot Destroy Program, and the Player must defeat him to fully correct the Deep Log. Fortunately, despite all irregularities from the Mega Man franchise being cleared, RiCO and the cast are able to persist as Hunter Programs to continue helping the Player correct future errors.

X DiVE Characters Series

The game features a wide array of heroes and villains from the X series as well several other characters from across the franchise. At launch, longtime playable characters X, Zero, and Axl from the mainline games are joined by Alia and Pallette, previously playable in Mega Man X8, Vile, previously playable in Mega Man Maverick Hunter X, and Cinnamon, Steel Massimo, Marino and Ferham from Mega Man X: Command Mission; Cinnamon, Massimo, and Marino debuting in their first side-scrolling game and Ferham making her first playable appearance. Later, additional characters were included, such as Layer, Sigma, and Iris. Characters also have variations and skins available, such as X using different armors.

The game also included characters from other branches of the franchise:

Supporting characters include the Player, RiCO, iCO, ViA, Droit, Angie, Erato, and Eddie.

Gameplay

DiVE is a 2D action-platformer made with a modified engine from Mega Man Maverick Hunter X. While the gameplay is largely similar to that of a typical side-scrolling Mega Man game, certain aspects are changed in that the player can attack enemies from all angles with an optional automatic aim system (similar to that of Mega Man X7), enemies don't drop any recovery items, and rather than a character using their own primary weapons along with Maverick/Robot Master Special Weapons, one has a primary weapon and a secondary weapon, ranging from busters, close combat weapons, rifles, mortars, and sprayers. A single-stage from a mainline game is split up into five different levels with a boss at the end of each of them, i.e., the Highway Stage from Mega Man X is split up into five chapters. Each level completion will reward players' stars, which have special requirements to achieve. Additional rewards can be earned when the player managed to get a specific number of stars on each stage.

Achievements

The Steam version of the game has achievements, the online version having 22 and the offline version 35.

Mega Man X DiVE Offline

Mega Man X DiVE Offline has most of the content from the online version, with some differences:

  • Multiplayer features like the co-op, arena, and guild were removed.
    • Abilities from characters, weapons and cards related with the removed contents were adjusted.
  • All collaboration content, including events, characters, weapons, and cards, has been removed.
  • Except for the collaboration stages, all event stages with a story are available to be played anytime.
  • Instead of a gacha, characters and weapons can be purchased in the shop. To prevent the player from becoming too powerful too fast, most are locked until the player advances in the story. For example, most DiVE Armors only become available after clearing the story mode.
  • A music player was included.
  • Characters exclusive to the global online version are not included in the offline version, such as Maximum Massimo.

Trivia

  • Mega Man X DiVE’s story of the Player entering a digital world as Hunter Programs to combat glitches that use settings and enemies from previous games is similar to Mega Man Xtreme’s story, where X is uploaded into the Mother Computer’s network to stop an unknown hacker that uses settings and enemies from previous games.
  • So far Mega Man X DiVE is the franchise's game with the most "meta" plot. The game itself recognizes Mega Man as a game franchise, and RiCO and ViA often speak directly to the Player, breaking the fourth wall.
  • Except for the new characters, Iris, Ciel and Bass are the only playable characters in the game who do not use recycled audio, although Iris was implemented as a playable character on June 11, 2020, the plan to record new dialogue for her was delayed by complications related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, Yūko Mizutani, Iris's original voice actress, passed away on May 17, 2016, necessitating a recast. The update noted that recorded dialogue for Iris would be implemented at a later date.[12] Ciel also lacks a voice as of being implemented as a playable character on August 26, 2020, with her voice recordings also having been scheduled to be implemented at a later date.
  • Among the Mega Man titles, Mega Man X DiVE offers the largest roster of playable characters, with over 40 characters (Excluding variants of the same character).
  • Certain English words are censored in the chat due to their offensive nature. The system will also censor some parts of the words which also resulted in Massimo and Bass's names being censored. An update fixed the name issue, though parts of some words are still censored.
  • The game is the first time that many returning characters have become playable: Bit, Iris, Colonel, Magma Dragoon, Dynamo, Gate, Nana, Ferham, χ -kai-, Ciel, Pandora, Roll Caskett, Harp Note, Rogue. If not counting minigames and Biometals then there are also Leviathan, Harpuia, Copy X, and Omega.
  • Spider is the only previously-playable character in the Mega Man X series who does not appear in this game.
  • In this game, "DiVE" is written as "ダイヴ" (Daivu) in Japanese. Incidentally, the word "dive" is generally written as "ダイブ" (daibu).
  • The names of RiCO, ViA, and iCO use the same lowercase "i" as DiVE.
  • It is possible to download the game on Amazon Fire Tablet even though it is not available in the App Store. It requires an installer application to download from the internet. That version cannot do paid purchases, and it runs very slowly, causing crashes.
  • Violen and Eregion already have 3D models in the game but are not used, and they later made cameos in the credits of Rockman X DiVE Offline.
    • Incentas from Mega Man X: Command Mission appeared in an accidentally-leaked image from NebulaJoy's ads. The Dev team also confirmed that Prometheus would be a playable character, but the end of online servers ended up canceling the idea.[13]
  • It was revealed in the Rockman X DiVE Artbook that was released on December 18, 2023, some content not used in DiVE. Some concept art revealed Rockman Xover collaboration content on Rockman DiVE, the leaked image has concept art of the characters Nero L and Oro S.[14]
