Arvid Svendel Grius
Arvid Svendel Grius, also known as Arvid Alces and more commonly as simply Grius, is a temporary playable character in Metaphor: ReFantazio. A member of the rhoag tribe, he is a master of both martial arts and magic. He is the father of Maria Alces.

Personality[]
Grius is a strong and brave veteran soldier as well as a loving and affectionate father, caring deeply for his daughter Maria and doing what he does to safeguard her future and well-being.
Profile[]
Grius is a former mercenary who was hired by the king to tutor the prince in swordsmanship. He later helped form the resistance faction seeking to break the prince's curse and infiltrated the State Army as an undercover agent using the alias "Arvid Grius." While capable of using Archetypes to aid the party, he never awakens to his own.
He was once romantically involved with an unnamed ishkia woman and had Maria with her, though she succumbed to an illness and died when Maria was still young. After this, he enters a common-law marriage with Fabienne and raises Maria with her. Due to complicated circumstances involving Grius and travel, Fabienne takes over the Hushed Honeybee Inn for him.
Acting as operatives for the resistance, the protagonist and Gallica are assigned to relay a confidential message to Grius. Finding him in the Northern Border Fort after killing the human Homo Gorleo, Gallica informs Grius that the mission has changed and he must kill the person behind the assassination attempt in order to lift the curse placed on the prince. Thinking that Louis Guiabern was the one responsible, much like the majority of the kingdom, Grius gladly accepts. Together with Leon Strohl, the quartet begins working in secret, though he was initially wary of Strohl until the ex-lordling awakens to his Archetype, the Warrior.
Upon returning to Grand Trad after defeating Captain Klinger in the Nord Mines, Grius brings the party to the Hushed Honeybee Inn and introduces his family. He asks the others to keep Maria company and, on the morning of the royal funeral, leaves before anyone else wakes up. Louis crashes the event to make a scene and Grius rushes in to assassinate him when his back is turned, while Strohl and the protagonist stand disguised in the gathered crowd to incie a distraction. The plan is foiled at the last possible moment, however, when the royal magic activates and restrains him for an attempt to eliminate a candidate for the throne, giving Louis an opportunity to slit his throat and effectively meaning that Grius fell by the hands of the king that he once served. Under Hulkenberg's command, Grius' body is taken and interred in the mausoleum. Visiting Akademeia after this will have More telling the protagonist that all the magla spent on Grius for Archetype customization has been reimbursed.
When the party attempts to breach the Grand Cathedral, his corpse is brought back to life as a powerful undead at the hands of Louis' right-hand man, the necromancer Zorba. Grius is powerful enough to subdue the protagonist, Strohl, and Hulkenberg, with Hulkenberg accepting her death due to the shame she still carries at failing to protect the prince. When the protagonist reveals that the prince still lives, she awakens to her Archetype, the Knight, and battles Grius with the others.
Before passing on once more, Grius entrusts both the prince's and Maria's fate into their hands, with the party obtaining Grius's Memento after the fight.
Manga version[]
The sequence of events that would lead to the protagonist infiltrating the army to meet Grius are not present. Instead, he meets Grius lounging inside the Hushed Honeybee Inn once he saves Maria from a paripus vagrant and saves Strohl from a Sandworm Valmo.

Etymology[]
- Arvid is derived from Old Norse Arnviðr, meaning "forest of eagles" or "eagle wood." Arvid is a royal name composed of words with the meanings "king" and "legend."
- Alces is a genus of even-toed ungulates with two species: the moose (Alces alces) and the fossil Alces gallicus (also known as the Gallic moose).
- Svendel could possibly mean "boy, lad" (sven) and "part of a whole" (del). Svend is also Danish for "young man, apprentice."
- Grius is the plural form of griu, a Catalan word meaning "griffin."
Trivia[]
- In the English dub, he is given a Scottish accent.
- Grius' death is foreshadowed by the fact that of the first three playable characters, he is the only one to not have an innate Archetype and had to have the ability to use them be unlocked, as well as the fact he didn't form a Follower Bond with the protagonist.
- Although his death occurred right during the royal magic's activation at the start of the game, he still represented the rhoag tribe as a member of the protagonist's party, technically completing the protagonist's list of traveling allies each being from a different tribe.
- Grius has unused voice lines for Archetypes beyond the three (Seeker, Warrior, Mage) that he has access to.
- Despite being a reanimated corpse, Undead Grius as an enemy has the person race instead of the undead race.
