Appearances[]
- Persona 3 / FES / Portable
- Persona 4 / Golden
- Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth
- Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth
Design[]
Jotun of Grief resembles a white, obese humanoid creature with six arms, with a pair of arms on its chest, at its shoulders, and on its back. Its arms are chained by handcuffs, with the middle pair of arms chained to its legs. It is also riding on a white rocking horse with a steel mask and steel rockers. Just like other Hanged Man Shadows, its mask is upside down.
Profile[]
Persona 3[]
Jotun of Grief is the final guardian encountered in Tartarus. Its Arcana is the Hanged Man and it is located on 252F in the Adamah Block. It blocks all ailments. Upon defeating this boss, the Judgement Social Link will reach Rank 9. Tartarus will remain blocked at 254F until the game's (playable) final day.
Jotun of Grief is designed to exploit an unprepared party, as it absorbs all attacks other than Pierce and Almighty. If any party member uses a default Physical attack that isn't Pierce-based, the enemy's strategy of Stagnant Air + Infuriate would have that enraged party member attacking (healing) it twice.
It's recommended to bring three allies that use Pierce attacks; Yukari, Ken, and Aigis. The protagonist should use a Spear or Bow weapon with +Resist Rage or equip a Persona with Null Rage. Allowing other party members to become Enraged can be a double-edged sword; damage output is increased and they get to attack twice per turn, but their defense stat will be significantly lower. Therefore, the protagonist should be immune to Rage in order to heal and revive party members. Buffs and debuffs are also particularly helpful here since the boss can use any of the three "Ma-" debuff moves.
Upon reaching low health, Jotun of Grief radically changes its strategy by casting a Mind Charged Megidolaon continuously until it is killed or healed above the critical threshold. Note that it will also no longer cast Infuriate during this phase.
Alternatively, it is possible and advisable to fight it using any character with a "break" type spell, followed up by the according "dyne" spell. Also bring along a character who is proficient in buff and debuffs and any method necessary to counter the boss enraging spell, may that be an item or curing spell.
Jotun of Grief reappears later in the second and third section of Empyrean within the Abyss of Time as a regular enemy. It maintained the same elemental affinities as its sub-boss variant.
Persona 4 / Golden[]
Jotun of Grief appears on Paths 5 and 6 of Yomotsu Hirasaka within the Midnight Channel. It will attack with Wind skills and replenish its HP with Life Leech. When defeated, it may drop Ripper Horse. Selling ten Ripper Horses at the TV extension of Daidara Metalworks will unlock the Futsuno Mitama for the protagonist in the shop.
In Golden, it appears on Paths 4, 5, and 8. It will attack with God's Hand and Megido, and occasionally buff itself and allies with Revolution. It replaces its physical resistance with a resistance to electricity and can now reflect fire.
Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth[]
Jotun of Grief appears on floors 5 through 7 of the Clock Tower. Weak to Electricity, it attacks with single-target Physical skills and may reduce the party's defense with Marakunda. When defeated, it may drop W Horse Piece and W Horse Cuffs. W Horse Piece is used to create the Athame for Koromaru and Yosuke, the Gold Arrow for Zen and Rei, the Lightning Bow for Yukari, and the Delta Drive accessory. W Horse Cuffs is used to create the Double Ziggurat for Akihiko, the Yagrush for Shinjiro, Romulus' Spear for Ken, Peerless Heels for Chie, the Kacho Fugetsu for Yukiko, and the Golden Bullet for Zen and Rei.
Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth[]
Jotun of Grief appears on Blocks 4 and 5 of the Theater District. It attacks with Physical skills and can lower the party's defense. When defeated, it may drop Jotun Cache and Jotun Rocker. Jotun Cache is used to create the Misericorde for the P5 hero, the Warlord Hammer for Shinjiro, the Chromatic Orb for Morgana, the Mithril Club for Junpei and the P4 hero, Tomoe's Bow for Yukari, and the Aigis Armor v0 for Aigis. Jotun Rocker is used to create the Megaton Rod for Ryuji, the -Star Claw for Teddie, and the Papal Robe unisex armor.
