സ്കോട്‌ലാന്റുകാരനായ ഡോക്ടറും സസ്യശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനും 1772 -ൽ നൈട്രജൻ വേർതിരിച്ചതുവഴി പ്രസിദ്ധനുമായ ഒരു രസതന്ത്രജ്ഞനുമാണ് ഡാനിയേൽ റൂതർഫോർഡ് (Daniel Rutherford). FRSE FRCPE FLS FSA(Scot) (3 നവംബർ 1749 – 15 ഡിസംബർ 1819).
പ്രസിദ്ധനോവലിസ്റ്റായ സർ വാൾട്ടർ സ്കോട്ടിന്റെ അമ്മാവനാണ് ഇദ്ദേഹം.
ആൻ മക്കെയ്, പ്രൊഫസർ ജോൺ റഥർഫോർഡ് (ജീവിതകാലം, 1695-1779) ദമ്പതികളുടെ മകനായി 1749 നവംബർ 3 നായിരുന്നു റൂഥർഫോർഡിൻറെ ജനനം. 16-ആം വയസ്സിൽ അദ്ദേഹം തന്റെ കുടുംബ വീടിനടുത്തുള്ള വെസ്റ്റ് ബോയിലെ മുണ്ടെൽസ് സ്കൂളിൽ കോളേജ് ജീവിതം ആരംഭിച്ച അദ്ദേഹം തുടർന്ന് എഡിൻബർഗ് സർവകലാശാലയിൽ വില്യം കുള്ളെൻ, ജോസഫ് ബ്ലാക്ക് എന്നിവരുടെ കീഴിൽ വൈദ്യശാസ്ത്രം അഭ്യസിക്കുകയും, 1772-ൽ ഡോക്ടറേറ്റ് (എംഡി) നേടുകയും ചെയ്തു. 1775 മുതൽ 1786 വരെയുള്ള കാലത്ത് അദ്ദേഹം എഡിൻബർഗിൽ ഒരു ഫിസിഷ്യനായി പരിശീലനം നേടി.
