SCENE 1 Susan welcomes the viewer and introduces Pete Seeger. He's visiting the street for the day because his car had a busted chain, so he's waiting for the garage to fix it. Pete says he has a song that is like a chain, where each verse leads to another. He sings "The Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly". Oscar the Grouch sings along from his trash can, but nearly faints in disbelief by the end of the song. SCENE 1
cont'd Susan calls the kids' attention to the sky and they watch Alphabet Bates draw the letter N. (First: Episode 0040) Cartoon Eugene wants his talking crow Willis to name some N words, and Willis replies with "no," "nothing," "nobody" and "never."

SCENE 2 Mr. Hooper collects everybody's soda glasses and asks Pete where he learned all those songs. Pete compares them to a chain, because he learned them from people who learned them from other people. He sings the Woody Guthrie song “Why Oh Why.” Song "Octopus One-Man Band"
(First: Episode 0004) Celebrity Tim Conway says, "One more time!" SCENE 3 Robbie is sad because the chain fell off his bicycle. Pete says he has a chain, but Gordon says a bicycle is smaller than a car, so it needs a smaller chain. He takes the kid to the repair shop, while Pete sings a song about a bicycle: "Daisy Bell (Bicycle Built for Two)" Song “Song of Eight”

(First: Episode 0019) SCENE 4 Bob explains to the kids what a round is. He teaches Pete and the kids the Robert Allen song "Why Choose to Be Afraid?" Oscar sneaks up on the group, only to declare that he's not afraid of anything. Muppets Ernie has four apples, and wants to draw the number 4, showing that he has four apples. However, Cookie Monster wants to eat an apple, so Ernie crosses out the 4 and draws a 3. Then Cookie Monster decides not to eat the apple, causing Ernie to have to cross out the 4 again and draw another 3, over and over again. SCENE 5 Pete teaches Bob, Susan, Gordon and the kids how to hambone. After the lesson, two boys do an elaborate version similar to the tune of "Hush Little Baby." Song "Fireman Ready to Go"

SCENE 6 Mr. Hooper introduces the ET family to the viewer, starting with the word "set." Gordon feeds a dog, demonstrating the word "pet". Finally, Mr. Hooper displays the word "yet," and the "y" flies away. Cartoon Gloria sings the alphabet (uppercase version; no piano accompaniment). A skinny monster with green hair is actually a tree, and a giant's donut is a tire. Pete spies a bridge, only this one is real... Film "Sometimes, when you want to get somewhere, you need a bridge."
Music: "Eine kleine Nachtmusik - Allegro," The Swingle Singers SCENE 8 Big Bird asks to sing with Pete and the kids. Pete tells him he can sing the chorus, and instructs him on how to do so after a few failed attempts. They all sing "Michael, Row the Boat Ashore." Big Bird leaves after the song to form a music group with some fellow birds. SCENE 10 Susan and Bob say goodbye to Pete, as he departs with his banjo and chain. Afterwards, they display the sponsors while Gordon announces them, and the credits follow.
CLOSING SIGNS Ernie and Bert hold the Sesame Street sign, while Oscar and Bob hold the Children's Television Workshop sign.
