Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

   <Desc / Clms Page number 1>
  Process for the preparation of addition compounds of sulfur dioxide with aromatic p-diamines.
   Aromatic p-diamines which are used in dyeing, e.g. B. for dyeing dead or living hair, are widely used and can also be used as a photographic developer, are very sensitive to oxidizing agents and are largely changed in the air with strong discoloration.
   It has now been found that aromatic p-diamines can be converted into readily water-soluble compounds that can be stored very easily in air if the bases are dissolved in an inert solvent with the exclusion of water and treated with sulfur dioxide. One gets in this way
 EMI1.1
 are useful and remain unchanged in the air.
   It has already been proposed to introduce gaseous sulphurous acid into an aqueous solution or suspension of p-phenylenediamine at high temperature to obtain an air-resistant compound which is soluble in cold water and which has 1 mol of sulphurous acid per 9 mol of p-phenylenediamine contains (see German Patent No. 198497). The products obtainable by the present process are entirely different from these; They contain the aromatic p-diamine and sulfur dioxide in a molecular ratio, but due to the complete exclusion of water when they are prepared, no salt formation occurs.
   Example 1: 1 part of p-toluenediamine is dissolved in 4 parts of benzene and sulfur dioxide is introduced until it is saturated. A red-brown compound precipitates, which is filtered off with suction and freed from benzene by drying in air. A pure white compound remains, which can be kept unchanged without releasing sulphurous acid when lying in the air.
   Example 2: 1 part of p-phenylenediamine is dissolved in 20 parts of benzene and sulfur dioxide is passed in until it is saturated. The reaction product is worked up as described in Example 1.
