Background Art

Recent studies have shown that certain wavelengths of light have an impact on health. For example, red light is believed to stimulate collagen growth, thereby eliminating fine lines and tightening pores; yellow light can improve intracellular oxygen exchange and cause skin cell regeneration; blue light with higher energy can kill porphyrin compounds that cause acne (Kawada, Journal of Dermatologicalscience 30 (2002) 129-135). This has been applied in beauty salons, and some treatments use LED light sources to treat patients with light therapy (https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/PDT-7-color-lights-led-photon_60738799145.html?spm=a2700.details.maylikehoz.2.11ac5ecdx4Xz3g). LED light sources in the form of masks can be used for home beauty treatments and are already available on the market (https://detail.1688.com/offer/537712859216.html?spm=a262fl.8287134.2826706.5.65c932c5Fou tTi). In the medical field, deep red or near-infrared light sources have been shown to kill bad cells such as cancer cells while growing good cells such as wound healing and hair growth (Dong, Photomedicine, OLED summit; Guo, Photodiagnosis and Photodynamic Therapy 2015). Recently, there have been news reports that using red light can also help with weight loss, as red light exposure has been found to shrink fat cells (https://www.ledinside.com/news/2015/9/us_doctor_using_red_led_technology_to_aid_weight_loss). In addition, light exposure can also affect mood. US 4,777,937 introduces a helmet that emits monochromatic light. Combined with a pink noise stimulus, this flashing helmet can produce an extrasensory perception effect to help relieve stress. In particular, green and blue light are believed to help bring a sense of relaxation. Fraunhofer FEP has demonstrated an OLED bracelet that can emit specific wavelengths to help heal wounds or treat depression (see Figure 2, http://www.osadirect.com/news/article/2152/fraunhofer-fep-hoslt-centre-and-vtt-develop-flexible-or ganic-electronics-for-wearable-applications/). In addition, researchers have found that increasing or decreasing sunlight can help with jet lag. For example, when flying east, it is generally believed that more sunlight in the early morning can help adjust the traveler's biological clock, while when flying west, more sunlight should be exposed to the evening (http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20140523-the-science-of-jet-lag). However, in general civil aviation journeys, the cabin lights are dimmed and the sunshades are pulled down, so additional sunlight is not possible. On the other hand, blue light exposure should be reduced at night, especially before going to bed. Current general lighting generally uses LED or fluorescent bulbs, which have strong blue light wavelengths below 450 nanometers, which can interfere with normal sleep. OLED generally does not contain deep blue light and is an ideal light source for sleep.

There are already commercial LED masks on the market. These products use LED chips arranged in an array on the back of a plastic mask (see Figure 1). LEDs are high-intensity point light sources that usually generate heat. Therefore, LED light sources are generally integrated with heat sinks to remove heat energy, and these LEDs must be arranged at a certain distance when used in an array to dissipate heat. This leads to three disadvantages of LED masks. First, these masks are thick and heavy because they must have heat sinks to dissipate heat and must be kept a certain distance from the face for safety. Some of these masks weigh up to 1.6 kilograms and are very uncomfortable to wear on the face. Second, in the array arrangement, the LEDs are all located independently at a certain position and there is a gap between them, which leads to uneven light emission. In cosmetic treatments, such uneven light can lead to uneven skin tone or the need for multiple treatments in different areas. Finally, in order to cover the entire face, a large number of LEDs are required, sometimes up to 200 chips. This increases the difficulty of LED selection, assembly and maintenance.

In contrast, OLED is a surface light source, cold light source, non-glaring, and thin and light, making it very easy to integrate into flexible substrates. This makes OLED an ideal choice for wearable applications. Nevertheless, the preparation of OLED masks and the entire system are still very different from LED masks because of the different structures of the two. On the other hand, although flexible OLED lighting with various shapes and applications has been demonstrated (US 8,773,013, US 8,907,560), few are related to medical functions. When used in medical devices, the design needs to be reconsidered, and there are certain requirements for OLED light sources. For example, for a mask, the substrate material and shape must be designed to fit the surface as closely as possible. At the same time, depending on the treatment purpose, light sources with certain wavelengths will be favored, including the near-infrared spectrum. Even in some wearable model demonstrations, such as FraunhoferFEP's OLED bracelet, they are more decorative. In our invention, OLED is a light source that can be worn or close to the body with medical functions, and we also introduce the production method.

Flexible OLEDs are key to wearable or near-body applications. Flexible OLEDs can be fabricated on a variety of flexible substrates, including but not limited to polyimide (PI), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyethylene naphthalate (PEN), metal films, fabrics, leather, paper, etc. For applications such as facial masks or eye masks, the device is expected to fit perfectly, so commonly used substrates are PI, PET, PEN, and the thickness does not exceed 0.3mm. When used in slimming belts, the substrate can be PI, PET, PEN, leather or fabric, and the thickness does not exceed 1mm. The flat layer can be coated on the preparation side of the substrate, that is, the side where the OLED is to be coated. The substrate can be coated with a thin film encapsulation layer on the preparation side, or on both sides. An anode is deposited on the substrate and patterned using a mask or photolithography. Multiple organic layers are coated on the substrate with the anode, followed by the deposition of the cathode. In another solution, one or more functional layers can be printed on the flexible substrate. The anode, organic layer, and cathode constitute a basic OLED device. The materials and methods for preparing the anode, organic layer, and cathode are well known to those skilled in the art. A thin film encapsulation layer can be added on top of the cathode. The thin film encapsulation layer can be an organic layer, or more preferably an alternating combination of organic and inorganic layers. At least one pair of contact electrodes, including at least one cathode and one anode, extends outside the encapsulation area for external electrical drive. A flexible printed circuit board (FPC) can be pre-printed with circuits for connecting the flexible OLED to an external drive or internally connecting multiple OLEDs. The FPC board can be electrically bonded to the OLED contact electrodes with conductive glue. The assembly of the flexible OLED onto the FPC can be detailed in application CN201810572632.3, which is incorporated by reference in its entirety. In some embodiments, external drive can be achieved by welding wires on the electrical contacts. A light extraction layer can be added to the light-emitting surface of the flexible OLED. A support film can be added to the non-light-emitting surface of the flexible OLED. A basic OLED device plus an encapsulation layer and an external drive solution, with an optional light diffusion film, an FPC board, and a support board, constitute an OLED light-emitting panel. The manufacture of flexible OLEDs is well known to those skilled in the art and is not limited to the above description.

A schematic cross-sectional view of such a flexible OLED light-emitting panel is shown in FIG3a. The flexible OLED light-emitting panel comprises a substrate, an OLED device, a pair of contact electrodes electrically connected to the OLED device, a thin film encapsulation layer but exposing the contact electrodes, an adhesive structure connecting the pair of contact electrodes to an external driving circuit, and a cover film 305. The OLED device can be a bottom-emitting device, a top-emitting device, or a transparent device, that is, both sides can emit light. The cover film can be a flexible printed circuit board, on which a circuit electrically connected to the OLED device through an adhesive structure is pre-printed. In another embodiment, the adhesive structure can be an FPC frame, and the cover film 305 can be a plastic film to provide mechanical support. The cover film 305 can also be a light extraction layer. The cover film 305 can be transparent. An additional thin film encapsulation layer 306 can be coated on one or both sides of the substrate, as shown in FIG3b. The cover film can also be coated with an additional thin film encapsulation layer 306, but it is not shown in the figure here. In FIG3c, a light extraction layer 307 can be added on one side of the light-emitting surface. If the OLED is a bottom-emitting device, the light extraction layer can be added on one side of the substrate. In another embodiment, if the OLED is a top-emitting device, the light extraction layer 307 can be added on the encapsulation layer 306. This flexible OLED light-emitting panel will be the basis of the medical light-emitting device described below.

First embodiment:

In the first embodiment, we disclose an OLED mask with medical effects. A half OLED mask 400 is shown in FIG. 4 . The half mask includes a flexible OLED light-emitting panel 410, a hole 403 leaking out the eye part, and an optional hook 404 for hanging the mask on the user's ear. The flexible OLED light-emitting panel 410 further includes a non-luminous area 401 and a luminous area 402. The non-luminous area 401 may include a portion of a substrate, a portion of a thin film encapsulation layer, a contact electrode, a portion of an FPC board, a portion of a light extraction layer, and/or a portion of a supporting film. The shape of the flexible OLED light-emitting panel should be representative of a human face, which may be more than 60% similar, including one or more of the following combinations, forehead area, eye area, cheek area, and neck area. Here, "representative" means the same or roughly similar, but does not require the contour or area to be completely consistent. This includes, but is not limited to, the contour shape is the same but the contour perimeter is proportionally stretched, or the contour shape has a similarity of 60% or more, or occupies 60% or more area. The similarity (60% as described above) can be evaluated by specific image processing recognition software or tools. The light-emitting area 402 can occupy more than 50% of the area of the entire flexible OLED light-emitting panel, and in a more optimized option, more than 80% of the area. The graphic design of this mask is well known to technicians in the field, where a two-dimensional plane can be converted into a three-dimensional mask after cutting. In particular, in order to allow the expansion of the flexible OLED light-emitting panel, it is necessary to make additional cuts in the nose wing (such as cutting line 405), in the chin and cheek area (such as cutting line 406), and in the midline area of the neck. The flexible OLED light-emitting panel 410 can be cut into the desired shape by laser. The light-emitting area 402 can be continuous across the entire substrate as shown in Figure 4. In another embodiment, as shown in Figure 5, the light-emitting area 402 can be divided into several areas, of which a portion 411 can roughly cover the forehead area, and another portion 412 covers the cheek area. Again, the figure is only for illustration, and any other graphics can be used. The separation of the light-emitting area can be achieved by separating one or more of the following layers: the anode layer, the organic layer, and the cathode layer. It can also be achieved by separating the substrates. In this case, the support film can be attached to all independent substrates to increase mechanical support. Multiple light-emitting areas 402 can be connected to an external power supply through FPC board points. Multiple light-emitting areas can be connected in parallel or driven individually. The light-emitting area 402 can further include multiple pixels, at least one of which emits blue light with a peak wavelength of 400-500 nanometers, one pixel emits yellow-green light with a peak wavelength of 500-580 nanometers, and one pixel emits red light with a peak wavelength of 580-800 nanometers. Multiple pixels emitting the same wavelength can be connected in parallel, while pixels of different wavelengths are driven individually. By using RGB pixels, spectral tunability can be achieved. The OLED mask 400 further includes a light-emitting surface 408 and a non-light-emitting surface 409. In the example of Figure 4, the light-emitting surface 408 points outside the paper, and the non-light-emitting surface 409 points inside the paper.

The other half of the OLED mask has a substrate and a light-emitting area that are mirror images of the above half when viewed from the light-emitting surface 408. FIG. 6 shows two halves 400 and 500 of the mirror-image OLED mask that have not yet been bonded, which will form an OLED mask 600 after bonding. The two halves of the mask can be bonded along a bonding line 601, as shown. This constitutes a conjugate bonding, that is, the two halves along the bonding line 601 form a mirror image. The bonding line 601 is roughly the center line position of the face. Note that the bonding line 601 shown in the figure is only an example, and other types of bonding lines can be used, such as segmented bonding along the bonding line 601. The bonding line 601 does not emit light and is part of the non-luminous area. The bonding process can be achieved by the following methods but is not limited to the following methods, adhesive bonding, heat bonding, pressure bonding, stitching, clamping and others. A three-dimensional effect diagram of a final OLED mask 700 observed from the non-luminous side is shown in FIG. 7a, including the bonding line 601, additional cutting lines 405 and 406. A two-dimensional effect diagram of a final OLED mask 710 observed from the light-emitting surface is shown in FIG7b, which includes two OLED masks 400 and 500. In order to achieve a good facial fit, the two-dimensional plane design of the OLED mask is crucial, and additional cutting will be required to help the expansion of the substrate material to complete the three-dimensional transformation. This is a very different strategy from preparing a simple flexible OLED lighting panel. It is also a novel approach to fit the two-flap two-dimensional mask. This approach has multiple benefits: 1. When the light-emitting area is reduced to at least two lobes, the production yield will increase; 2. The good fit with the face is also improved with the use of a two-flap mask; 3. The two-flap mask is easily folded into a two-dimensional form, reducing packaging and transportation costs. An elastic band 407 can be attached to the OLED mask 720 instead of the ear hook and wrapped around the user's head, as shown in FIG8. The elastic band 407 can further integrate conductive wires to drive the OLED mask, and batteries to drive the flexible OLED light-emitting panel. In addition, the controller and wireless communication device can also be integrated into the elastic band, so that the user can control the luminous mask through other devices such as mobile phones, notebooks, computers, smart watches, etc.

In some embodiments, the OLED mask does not need to cut out the eye area, as shown in Figure 9a. In other embodiments, the eye area can be partially cut out (such as 901), as shown in Figure 9b. This configuration can provide the flexibility to treat the eyes only when needed. In other embodiments, the mask can further include a neck area, as shown in Figure 10. Here, the flexible OLED light-emitting panel covering the neck area can be an extension of half of the mask, or it can be an independent neckband. Note that Figure 10 is only an example of this application, and other graphics can be used as long as they can cover 60% of the neck area.

In addition, the two OLED masks can also present complementary shapes. FIG. 13 shows an example in which an upper mask 421 and a lower mask 422 can be combined through a bonding line 423 to form a complete OLED mask 420. In this example, the two OLED masks do not present a mirror image, but rather interlock at the bonding line.

The OLED mask can provide the following possible therapeutic effects, but not limited to:

1.在发光波长>580nm时,刺激胶原蛋白生长,增加抗疲劳,激发细胞新陈代谢;1. When the luminous wavelength is >580nm, it stimulates collagen growth, increases anti-fatigue, and stimulates cell metabolism;

2.在发光波长<500nm时,消除粉刺炎症:抗菌,消炎,再生,抑制皮脂分泌,有抗衰老效果;2. When the luminous wavelength is less than 500nm, it can eliminate acne inflammation: antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, regenerative, inhibit sebum secretion, and have anti-aging effects;

3.在发光波长在500–580nm时,平衡色素,减缓细纹,给衰老的肌肤补充营养,加速伤口愈合;3. When the luminous wavelength is 500-580nm, it balances pigments, slows down fine lines, replenishes nutrients to aging skin, and accelerates wound healing;

4. When emitting white light, it imitates sunlight to alleviate jet lag.

Second embodiment:

Next, we disclose an OLED eye mask with medical effects. FIG11 shows an example of the eye mask. The OLED eye mask 800 includes a substrate 801, two light-emitting areas 802, and an elastic band 803. The OLED eye mask 800 further includes a light-emitting surface 808 and a non-light-emitting surface 809. As shown in FIG11, the light-emitting surface 808 points outside the paper, and the non-light-emitting surface 809 points inside the paper. The substrate 801 and the two light-emitting areas 802 can be components of the same flexible OLED light-emitting panel. In another embodiment, the two light-emitting areas 802 can come from two independent flexible OLED light-emitting panels. In this case, the two flexible OLED light-emitting panels can be conjugated along the bonding line 804, and the two panels are mirrored when viewed from the direction of the light-emitting surface 808. The two light-emitting areas 802 can be connected in parallel. Similarly, the elastic band 803 integrates cables and batteries for external drive. The controller and wireless communication device can be further integrated in the eye mask for remote control. Similarly, the luminous area can contain RGB pixels.

The OLED eye mask can provide the following possible medical effects, but not limited to:

1.在发白光时,仿日光减缓时差反应;1. When emitting white light, it imitates sunlight to alleviate jet lag;

2.在发光波长>580nm时,促进睡眠环境;2. When the luminous wavelength is >580nm, it promotes a sleeping environment;

3.减压并提供轻松感;3. Reduce stress and provide a sense of relaxation;

4.在发光波长>580nm时,刺激胶原蛋白生长,增加抗疲劳,激发细胞新陈代谢;4. When the luminous wavelength is >580nm, it stimulates collagen growth, increases anti-fatigue, and stimulates cell metabolism;

5.在发光波长<500nm时,消除粉刺炎症:抗菌,消炎,再生,抑制皮脂分泌,有抗衰老效果;5. When the luminous wavelength is less than 500nm, it can eliminate acne inflammation: antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, regenerative, inhibit sebum secretion, and have anti-aging effects;

6. When the luminous wavelength is between 500-580nm, it balances pigments, slows down fine lines, replenishes nutrients to aging skin, and accelerates wound healing.

The third embodiment:

In this embodiment, we disclose an OLED mask that does not require two separate halves of a flexible OLED. As shown in FIG. 12a, the OLED mask 100 has a light-emitting area 110 and a non-light-emitting area 111. The light-emitting area 110 includes an OLED device. The OLED device may also include multiple pixels, and similarly, the pixels may emit red, green, and blue. Cutouts 105 and 108 are used to expose the nose and mouth areas, while cutouts 101, 102, 106, and 107 are used to expand during 3D conversion. Note that additional cutouts may be introduced to assist in 3D conversion, and those skilled in the art have the knowledge to design this. Ear hooks 109 are attached to both sides of the mask. Alternatively, a headband may be applied as described above, but is not drawn here. The OLED mask 100 does not expose the eye area and is suitable for wearing during rest, sleep, or eye treatment. Alternatively, as shown in FIG. 12b, the eye area may be partially cut out, where additional cutouts 103 and 104 are added to the eye area in the OLED mask 200. The OLED mask 200 includes different light-emitting areas 210 and non-light-emitting areas 211. In another example, the OLED mask 300 (see FIG. 12c ) includes a light-emitting area 310 and a non-light-emitting area 311, wherein the eye area is completely cut off by cutouts 303 and 304. This mask is more preferred when the wearer needs to do other things during treatment.
