Abstract

1370293 Reducing fabric porosity MEADOX MEDICALS INC 19 Feb 1973 [23 Feb 1972] 8121/73 Heading DIP A knitted or woven synthetic polymer fabric is made less porous by immersion in a solution containing a minor proportion of a solvent for the polymer and a major proportion of a shrinking agent for the polymer until the fabric has shrunk by 30-41% in the mole direction. Preferably the synthetic polymer is polyethylene terephthalate, poly (1, 4-cyclohexylenedimethylene terephthalate) (kodel, R.T.M.), nylon 66 or polyacrylonitrile (Orlon and Acrilan, R.T.M.'s). The solvent may be hexafluoroisopropanol, hexafluoroacetone propylene adduct, hexafluoroacetone sesquihydrate, benzoic acid, trichloroacetic acid, phenol, metacresol or parachlorophenol and comprises 2 to 10% by weight of the solution. The shrinking agent may be a halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon having up to 6 carbon atoms, preferably chloroform, methylene chloride, tetrachloroethane or ethylene dichloride. For polyethylene terephthalate the solubility parameter of the shrinking solution should be between 9.1 and 11.0, i.e. close to that of the polymer (10.7) 10% by weight of tris (2, 3-dibromopropyl) phosphate as flame retardant, 4% of unspecified silicone water repellent or 1 % of Latyl Blue BCN (C.I. Dispense Blue 56) dye may be present. The shrinking procedure fixes such additives, render the fabric antistatic and reduce its tendency to snag. As exemplified the fabric is a tube warp-knitted from 40 or 70 denier yarn on a double needle bar Raschel machine with a tricot or lock stitch and is used as a cardic (especially vascular) prosthesis after crimping. Sailcloth, awning and umbrella fabric may also be rendered less porous. The fabric may be shrunk by immersion for 0.5 to 30 minutes in the solution at freezing point to boiling point, preferably 0 to 40‹C. Numerical readings of the fabric porosity are obtained by the Wesolowski method.
