[Classes 51 (i) and 55 (i).] The temperature and height of the clinker layer in gas generators having stepped revolving grates, are determined by means of a chamber arranged around the periphery of the generator in the vicinity of the grate, and provided with inlet and outlet conduits for cooling fluid, the temperature of the latter at the outlet of the chamber giving an indication of the heat condition and height of the clinker layer. The rate of flow of liquid through the chamber and its initial temperature are kept constant. The hood of the grate may comprise a similar arrangement. The generator a, in the vicinity of the grate c, is provided with the cooling chamber e having an inlet f and outlet g. At the latter is placed a thermometer. The chamber e may be divided into segment-shaped compartments each having inlets and outlets ; and each compartment may be subdivided by partition walls having overflows at their upper ends. The hollow hood n of the grate has an inlet and outlet o and p respectively, for the cooling fluid, the outlet being provided with a thermometer t.
