Abstract
621,576. Artificial joints. DESOUTTER, A. M. July 10, 1946, No. 20603. [Class 81 (ii)] A jointed artificial limb comprises two relatively movable limb members wherein opposing faces of the members are connected together solely by a block, pad or the like of rubber or similar material which is bonded or caused to adhere to the opposing faces thereby forming a resilient joint, which may flex in all directions. The opposing faces may be formed to converge about a central point of the joint and the rubber block, &c., may be shaped to conform to these faces and bonded thereto; the faces may assume the form of opposing or nesting obtuse angles in which the angle of one may be greater than the angle of the other, and the rubber block &c. may be of such shape that when its surfaces are forced to conform to the opposing surfaces and bonded thereto, either the extremities or the central portion of the block etc. will be in a state of compression. In another form, the faces may be formed of male and female portions in which the smaller and convex-faced male member is adapted to fit into the larger and concavefaced female member, the faces of these members being closest at their central positions and diverging outwards. In a modification of this form (Figs. 5 and 6) a lozenge-shape male member 24 is attached to a screw-threaded pin 25 which is inserted in a boring 20 and secured by a nut 28. The face 29 of one limb member (foot) is arcuate in formation (Fig. 6) and the face 30 of the other member (leg), formed with a cavity 18, is correspondingly shaped. A rubber block 31 shaped to fill the cavity 18 is forced therein and bonded thereto. A clearance space 32 between the limb members may be filled with a washershaped member. The male member may have convex or concave sides or it may be flat-sided. In another form, the opposing faces may converge towards each other to form a pivot point at one end of the faces. The block &c. may comprise a series of layers of rubber etc. bonded together and the faces of the block and the limb faces to which they are to be bonded may be formed with interengaging corrugations, studs, ridges or other uneven surfaces. The rubber blocks &c. may be bonded to separate attachments in turn adapted to be secured to the main limb-members. The joints may be used in artificial ankles, toes, knees, elbows or wrists.
