641,576. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. IOCO, Ltd., and GALLACHER, D. Jan 16, 1948, No. 1428. [Class 42 (i)] In the seaming of plastic-coated fabric (i.e. cotton, silk, rayon, nylon, &c. fabric coated with thermoplastic synthetic resin such as polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, polyvinyl acetate, or the like), two or more superposed layers 1, 2 of the fabric are stitched together and subsequently welded, at least one strip 3 of thermoplastic synthetic resin such as is used for the fabric coating being applied to the seam prior to welding, so that the strip can be sweated into the seam throughout the entire length of the seam during welding. As shown, Fig. 3, strip 3 is folded into the seam, one or more lines of stitching 4 are inserted, and the free edge 3a of the strip is folded over. to conceal the stitches on one side of the seam. In alternative seam constructions, two strips 3b, 3c, Fig. 5, may be used, or a single strip 3d, Fig. 6, may be used in a non- folded seam, the free edge 3a being folded to cover one side of the seam. Thermoplastic thread may be used for the stitching so that the thread will fuse together with the plastic coating during welding. Welding may be effected by radio-frequency electric heating.
