Abstract
758,616. Welding by fusion. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. Oct. 13, 1954 [Oct. 15, 1953], No. 29517/54. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XXVIII] In a joint in which a ferritic tube 1 is joined by a butt weld 11 to an austenitic tube 8, the tubes adjacent the weld 11 are enclosed by a pre-stressed ferritic ring 4 acting compressively on the austenitic tube 8, one end of the ring 4 being secured by a weld 12 to the ferritic tube 1 and the other end being formed with a flange 5 the inner face of which engages a shoulder 9 on the austenitic tube. The tubes are thickened adjacent the butt-weld 11 and that portion of the ring 4 positioned over the austenitic tube 8 is made of thicker section than the tubes. The butt-weld 11 is made of stabilized ferritic iron or steel. The ring 4 is shrunk on to the tubes.
