Lo strumento a cui si fa riferimento sono dunque i questionari di screening che prevedono l'applicazione di tabelle per fornire un punteggio di riferimento per detti questionari. Per un particolare formato di detti questionari, una volta che il paziente ha selezionato le risposte corrette per il suo caso specifico, ad ogni risposta viene attribuito un valore numerico e attraverso delle tabelle di interpretazione viene ottenuto un risultato che dovrebbe fare riferimento ad una diagnosi per il paziente.
