UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

AMUND LEVORSEN, OF LIGHTFOOT, VIRGINIA.

ALARM-SIGNAL.

Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed January 27, 1913.

Patented J une 3, 1913.

Serial No. 744,569.

cess to a safe or other container for valuable property.

The essential object in View is the effectual guarding of the property by apparatus which shall be simple and extremely cheap and at the same time perfectly effective.

With this and further objects in view, the invention comprises the combination of a fire-arm or other detonating device and apparatus disposed adjacent the guarded door or other entrance adapted to automatically discharge the detonating device on the approach of an unauthorized person.

The invention comprises certain other novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter set forth and claimed.

In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation illustrating an embodiment of the present invention as positioned for guarding the door of a safe. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the plane indicated by line 2-2 of Fig. 1 and looking in the direction indicated by the arrow, the parts being seen on an enlarged scale.

Referring to the drawing by numerals, 1 indicates a flooring and 2 the door of a bank safe or other safe. or, so far as the invention is concerned, the entrance to any container for valuables. Arranged within or disposed beneath the floor 1 is a

boxing

3 in which is arranged an upstanding bracket 4 which is rigidly fixed to the bot tom of the

boxing

3 and has its upper or free end formed into a clamp 5 surrounding the grip of a pistol 6 or other detonating device. The pistol 6 is provided with the usual trigger 7 which is surrounded by an eye 8 of an operating plunger rod 9. The rod 9 extends through guiding

brackets

10,

10 and at its upper end is connected to an actuating platform or plate 11 which is disposed in a recess in the floor 1 and arranged, when disposed in its operative position, to have its upper surface slightly above the upper surface of the floor so as to be depressed when subjected to the pressure of the foot of one walking on the floor 1. The eye 8, when the parts are in operative position, is adapted to rest upon the trigger of the pistol 6 and to sustain the plate 11 in its elevated position, the spring of the trigger being of sufficient strength to support the plate 11 without releasing the hammer of the pistol.

The rod 9, as clearly indicated in Fig. 2, is preferably provided with a swivel connection with theplate 11, and the eye or loop 8 is disposed at one side of the rod so that the rod may be revolved from a position with the loop surrounding and resting upon the trigger of the pistol to a position at one side thereof, the latter position being indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The plate 11 is apertured above the pistol for allowing of the free passage of the bullet. The

box

3 may be disposed at any convenient point beneath the floor 1, either between the joist-s or below the same, and said box is provided with a

door

12 which is hinged at one side of the box and provided with a

lock

13 for retaining the door in closed position against unauthorized access to the interior of the box.

The operator who sets the apparatus preferablv finds access to the

box

3 from the room beneath that in which the safe or other guarded

element

2 appears, and in setting the device the operator merelv sees that the pistol 6 is loaded and cooked and that the eve 8 is in position resting upon the trigger, whereat the plate 11 will be slightly above the level of the floor 1. For concealing the presence of the apparatus, a carpet or other covering, indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, may be disposed upon the floor and above the plate 11 without interfering with the operation thereof.

Should an unauthorized person make an attempt to open the door of the safe, the moment his foot strikes the plate 11 and depresses the same the pistol 6 will be discharged. The discharge of the pistol will serve, in addition to the results of the action of the bullet, in giving notice by the detonation of the presence of the unauthorized person.

It is obviously desirable, in the use of the invention, for the party whose duty it is to attend to the matter of setting the invention to see that a perfectly safe condition is provided during the daytime or working hours, and to this end the operator, in the mornin proceeds to open the

door

12 and first revolves the rod 9 until the loop assumes the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and then as a further protection he may break the pistol tothe position indicated in dotted lines in Fig; 1, it being apparent that the disposition of the loop or eye 8 at one side of the rod 9 disposes the rod at one side of the barrel of the pistol so that said barrel is free to swing tothe inopera tive position indicated in dotted lines. When the loop 8 is removed from its engagement with the trigger and then released, the plate 11 will drop to a position with its upper surface flush with the upper surface of the floor, the plate being supported on suitable inwardly extending lugs projecting from the sides of the

boxing

3, and in the evening when the operator restores the signal device to its guard condition he does so by slightly elevating the plate 11 and swinging the loop 8 back to a position resting upon the trigger of the pistol.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a relatively rigidly mounted fire-arm, of a deprcssible plate adapted to control the discharge thereof, and a rod swiveled to the plate and having a portion extending across the trigger of the fire-arm for discharging the same when the plate is depressed, the said rod being adapted to be moved pivotally to a position out of engagement with the trigger.

2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a relatively rigidly mounted fire-arm, of a depressible plate disposed adjacent the same, and a rod having a swiv elcd connection with the plate and extending to the trigger of the fire-arm, the said rod being formed with a loop extending at one side of the rod and adapted to be swung by rotation of the rod to and from a -position engaging and surrounding the trigger of the fire-arm.

In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two wltnesses.
