ADJUSTABLE NON-DETACHAIBLE "ror roe BAGS, BASKETS, AND Bannnns.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented uly 13, 1915.
' Application filed November 10, 19-14. SerialNo. 871.362.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, HENRY A. lVHITFIELD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of lvlonroe, in the parish of Ouachita and State of Louisiana, have made an Improvement in Adjustable Non-Detachable Tops for Bags, Baskets, and Barrels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in providing a top or cover for use in bags, baskets, barrels and other like receptacles for holding their con tents in place during shipment. I construct such top or cover in general conformity to the shape of the basket or other receptacle, and of such size that it is adapted for vertical adjustment therein, and I secure it detachably in place at any required height above the bottom by means of cords, straps, or equivalents, the same being secured at one end to the body of a receptacle at or near its bottom and at the other end to the top side of the top or cover.
The details of construction, arrangement, and combination of parts are as hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of a basket provided with my attachment. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the basket, together w th the adjustable top or cover above it. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of one of the cord or strap attachments.
In Figs. 1 and 2, A indicates the body of a basket and B my adjustable top or cover, the same being constructed preferably of canvas, but may be made of wood, metal, or other thin material. The said top or cover is provided with a vertical pendent flange 01 rim 6 and it is made of such size that it may be contained within the receptacle A and adjustable vertically therein so as to place it at different heights above the bottom according to the volume of the contents or articles contained in the receptacle.
Devices consisting of cords, strings, or straps are employed as means for securing the top or cover B in place; that is to say, upon the surface of the contents of the receptacle A. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 rings a are secured to the body of the receptacle A by means of loops a formed of leather straps or other suitable material, at a point near the bottom thereof, and similarly rings 5 are secured to the upper side of the top or cover B. Cords, strings or straps C are attached to the rings a, and, when the top or cover D is adjusted in place over the contents of the receptacle as shown in Fig. 1, the said cords or straps are passed through or otherwise attached to upper rings 6 and firmly tied or buckled in place. Thus the top or cover B is secured in place horizontally within the basket or other receptacle A, in such manner as to confine the contents so that the basket may be shipped, or handled roughly without danger of escape or dis lodgment of the contents.
It will be understood that while the cords or straps C are attached to the sides of the receptacle A near the bottom, they may in stead be attached to the bottom itself; and similarly, the upper ends of the cords or straps may be attached to rings on the flange or rim 6 of the cover D.
In many cases, it is desirable to secure the top or cover B permanently to the body A of the receptacle, without, however. interfering with its adjustability. For this purpose I employ one or more supplemental ropes or straps C applied as shown at the left in Figs. 1 and 2. Thus, such rope or strap is passed through the ring a on body A and ring Z) on top B, and other larger rings a are secured permanently to the ends of such rope or strap.
It will be understood that the rope prop-er C will have suflicient length and slack to permit the topB to be removed entirely from the receptacle A, in order to facilitate placing clothes or other things in the latter or removing them therefrom, but without permitting complete separation of said parts A, B. When the top B is being applied. as shown in Fig. 1, the slack rope C may be drawn up taut and the slack upper portion of it allowed to lie on the top B.
The drawing illustrates but one permanent fastening for the top B, but in practice several may of course be employed. If desired, an ordinary top or cover may be provided for the receptacle, as shown in Fig. 1.
What I claim is:
1. A receptacle for the purpose specified consisting of a body having practically vertical sides, a top or cover formed of light material and having a pendent rim, the same having a shape conforming to the receptacle in horizontal. section and made of less dimensions than the receptacle, so that it is adjustable vertically therein, and flexible at tachments secured to the sides of the receptacle adjacent to the bottom and adapted llt Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents body and passing slidably through a ring 10 on the top and having a device secured to its upper end which prevents Withdrawal from said ring, as described.
