UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES E. SMITH, OF CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BREASTPIN JOINTS OR TONGUES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 180,437, dated August 1, 1876; application filed March 27,1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES E. SMITH, of Charleston, in the county. of Charleston and State of South Carolina, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Joints andTongues forBreastpins, which improvement'is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to so arrange a joint and tongue for a breastpin, shawl-pin, cuff-pin, &c., that there will be no necessity of soldering the tongue, which'softens and destroys its utility. I
Figure 2 is a plan of my invention adjusted.
The invention is illustrated more in detail in the sectional view through VV of Fig. l.
A is the tongue. I is a cylinder, having a hole on one side, and a slot on the side opposite. This cylinderis soldered to the breastpin.
' L is a barrel, which is made to revolve inside of the cylinder I, having a large hole on one side, and a small one on the side opposite. The tongue is thus allowed to pass through the holes es and slot of the barrel and cylinder, where its head abuts against the inside of the barrel, where it is secured by rivet T. In this position the tongue, with the barrel and rivet, is allowed to revolve from one end of the slot to the other, which gives it the proper action to adjust and readjust when used.
I claim as my invention- The combination of the incasing-cylinder I, with the barrel L, to which is attached the tongue A by means of the rivet T,substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
CHARLES E. SMITH. Witnesses:
J os. W. HARRISSON, JAMES ALLAN.
