This invention relates to an improvement in heads for tanks and containers of ferrous and non-ferrous material and of other materials in which are stored fluid of different characters separated by heads or partitions welded or otherwise secured therein to prevent said fluid from coming into contact with each other, and mixing.
At present this type of partition is usually formed of two flanged heads, each head welded separately within the tank, and provision being made for the conveyance of leakage around the head, to a drain hole at the bottom of the tank.
The large amount of material required for this old type of double head and the great amount of labor necessary constitutes the most vital items in the manufacture of tank containers of the character described. It is also very expensive in time, labor and materials as to effect repairs in this type of head.
It is the principal object of this invention to provide a single compartment head of the character described which is extremely ef fective, possesses all of the'required features of the double compartment head and additional. features and advantages not possessed by the double compartment head and which is at the same time very much cheaper to manufacture and requires considerably less material for its construction, and is very easily and quickly installed within a tank or container. 7
Another object of the invention is to provide a partition head which requires very much less welding or other securing means for its installation in a tank or other re-' ceptacle and requires much less time and laher for its installation than the well known type described above.
Another object of the invention is to provide a tank partition head of the kind described which is very accessible for repair purposes. 7

to a person conversant with the art to which this invention relates as reference is had to the drawings and the accompanying specifications and the explanation thereof as follows: t
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section showing a tank with a head made acording to the invention and securedtherein,
Figure 2 is a cross section on the 1ine22 of Figure 1, showing my improved head disposed within a tank and the space or recess defined thereby.
The head comprises a plate 2 having an angularly laterally disposed flange attached thereto in which is formed an inward annular depression 3, the said flange adapted to be fitted snugly within the tank 4 and welded or secured at the edges of the flange as at 5 and 6. It is to be understood that any securing means may be resorted to within the invention.
At the bottom side of the tank and in register with the channel 7 which is defined by the annular depression 3 and the side of the tank 4, is a drain hole 8 to which is conveyed any fluid which may escape from either of the compartments into the channel 7 thus indicating to the attendant that there'is a leak in either one or both of the compartments as determined by the character of the fluid passing through the drain hole.
It is obvious that the head and the flange may be integral and of one piece construction and this is probably the most convenient and serviceable form, though it is not desired to limit the application of the invention strictly to one piece construction. Any formation of the head consistent with the invention may be resorted to.
Further, it is not desired to. limit the c0nstruction to any particular kind or type of tank or container but it may be applied to any receptacle of the general type in which the separation of different fluids carried or stored in the same tank or container is desired to be maintained to prevent either fluid from mixing with the other; neither is it desired to limit the materials used in the construction of the head and of which the tank or container may be composed, but any material or form or application of the invention may be made within the limitations of the claims.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new is:
1. A tank or container of the character described comprising a shell, a compartment head consisting of a plate having a laterally disposed flange at its perimeter adapted for 15 snug engagement with the inner surface of said shell, an annular depression in said flange to define, with the inner surface of the shell, an annular recess, said shell having an opening therein communicating with. said 2U annular recess.
2. A tank or container of the character described, a shell, a partition head therein comprising a plate, a laterally disposed rip ple flange at the perimeter of the plate adapted for snug engagement with the inner surface of the shell, said ripple formation arranged to provide a space to conduct leakage through said head to a drain hole or holes provided in the shell.

A partition head for tank or container of the character described comprising a plate, a laterally disposed flange at the perimeter of the plate the outer edge portions of which are adapted for snug engagement as with the inner surface of said tank or container, an annular inward depression in said flange, an opening in said tank or container communicating with the space limited by said annular recess and the inner surface of 40 the tank or container.
l. A one-piece partition head for tanks of the type described comprising a disk having a laterally formed peripheral flange of a size to snugly fit the interior of the tank 40 and transversely corrugated or rippled so as to present two or more annular contacting surfaces to the interior of the tank, and define therebetween, with the interior of the tank,
a drain passage running completely around 0 the flange and in communication with a drain aperture in the lower wall of the tank, said flange adapted to be secured in the tank by a line of welding at said contacting surfaces.
