W. CONESCU COLLAPSIBLE Box Filed June ll, 1954 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 ATTORNEY W. CONESCU will W? g.
COLLAPS IBLE BOX 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed June ll, 1934 INVENTOR Patented Apr. 7, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE COLLAP SIBLE BOX My invention relates to improvements in collapsible boxes, preferable of paper, card, ribreboard, card-board, corrugated paper or similar material, and more particularly has reference to and is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in its application to a box of rectangular form adapted for use in cloak, suit, dress and similar lines.
Referring to said drawings, Fig. 1 illustrates, in
lo plan View, a suitable blankv or blanks embodying an application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a View in perspective showing the blank shaped and folded in box form, one end being open. Fig. 3 illustrates the same in collapsed folded arrangel ment for stacking or carrying in stock, and Fig. 4
is a similar View showing modifications.
5 indicates the bottom of the box, 6, 1 the sides thereof, and 8, 9 the ends of the box. I0, I I indicate the two halves of the top.
The top portion I0 and
side6 may be formed of two pieces as shown and may be stitched together as indicated at I2, or may be hinged by a piece of fabric as indicated in dotted outline at I3, or the side 1 and top portion I I may be divided by a score line .at Il, for folding or hinging the same. At each of the four corners is preferably provided an inwardly folding gusset portion such as I5, I. The bottom of the box is also preferably hinged to the side and end portions by score lines such as I1, I8, and the corner pieces are also preferably separated from the side and end portions by scorings such as I9, 20, said gusset portions also having radial scorings 2 I, and at the lateral margins of the top sections flaps or tabs 2l to 24 inclusive may be provided, hinged by
scorings25. At the free ends of the
box ends8 and 9 are also preferably turned down portions such as 26, and the same, if desirable, may be slit at 21, 28 to provide three sections thereof indicated by
reference characters29, 30, and 3|.
In forming or setting up the box, the
free end portion26 is laid over and stitched as indicated at 32 or, if formed of three sections as indicated at 29, 30 and 3 I the outer sections may be stitched as indicated at 33, leaving the
inner section30 free on the
crease line34, and in either case the
crease line34 is slit or cut through as indicated u, Brooklyn, N. Y.
1934, Serial No. 730,085
at 35. When the side and end portions are turned up, the gusset in corners bend inwardly laying flat against the end portions of the box, after which the top portions may be turned over bringing the tab portions 2l to 24, inclusive, over the
slits35, the same being bent at right angles to enter the slits, so that when the
continuous iiap26 is used these tab portions are bound between the
iiap26 and the
end wall8, whereas when the flap is divided in three sections as shown at the right of the figure, the
intermediate section30 extends at right angles to the end wall 9, thus giving additional support and rigidity beneath the top portions I0, II.
When stacking the boxes in stock, the top portion I0 may be turned outwardly from the center upon the
side portion6, as shown in Fig. 3, and the same applies to the top portion I I which may be turned over on the side portion 1, or the top portions I0 and II may be turned under the
side portions6 and 1, if desired, or, if preferable, the side or top portion such as 6 and I0 may be turned over as a whole in alignment upon the other side and top portion 1, I I, as shown in Fig. 4, the end portions and corner gussets extending flat as shown, thus providing a convenient compact method of collapsing the box for stacking or carrying in stock.
Of course it will be understood that various modifications may be made in the construction, form and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention is claimed.
I claim:
A box of the class described, having a rectangular bottom portion and rectangular side, end and top portions, each half of said topportion hinged to the upper edge of said side portions, and in combination with the lateral margins of said top portions, tabs adapted to engage with said end portions, said end portions having turned down marginal portions with slits in one marginal portion to receive the other marginal portion, one of said marginal portions divided into three sections, inwardly folding gussets between said end and side portions, said topportions of separate pieces of material hinged to said side portions.
