1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to spring mattresses.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a double coil spring arrangement wherein one coil will help to support the other and prevent the coils from bending out of shape and while permitting up and down motion not too much side slipping tending to throw the mattress out of shape is permitted.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a spring mattress having a side opening which permits the separation of portions of the mattress and the easy cleaning of the springs within the mattress and wherein the portions are connected by a simple slide fastener arrangement extending about three sides of the mattress.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a spring mattress having double spring coils formed of one wire which is of simple construction, inexpensive to manufacture, has long life, compact and sturdy, easy to maintain, has a minimum number of parts and eflicient in operation.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. l is a perspective view of the mattress embodying the features of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic layout view of the double coil spring.
Referring now to the figures, It and I! respectively represent bottom and top padded portions which lie over a spring arrangement indicated generally at 12, and formed of a plurality of double spring coil structures l3 connected as units with other structures to form the arrangement.
Each of the
spring coil structures13 is formed of a single wire wound in such a manner as to provide two
coil portions14 and I5 and top and bottom flat supporting portions l6 and I1 engageable respectively with the padded
portions10 and II. At the upper part of the coil portions l4 and I5 they may be locked by a clip 11' and at the bottom parts of the coil portions by a similar clip l1. Likewise, the structures l3 can be tied together within the mattress by similar clips.
In Fig. 4, there is shown a diagrammatic top or bottom view of one of the unit structures. Each
coil portion14 and I5 is formed of a separate wire, and the ends of the wires are interlocked with one another on the top and
bottom portions16 and ll of the structure. In order to keep the wire ends, after they have been connected with portions l6 and H, from pulling away upon the wire, a kink or double bend formation is placed in the wire, as indicated at 18. As the wire end pulls, it will engage with the formation I8 and be stopped whereby to prevent the outward displacement of a coil portion.
As shown in Fig. 4, the upper ends of the two coil wires are formed to end as indicated at [9 and 20 respectively. On the bottom of the structure, the wire ends will similarly end after providing for the bottom portion ll of the unit. The ends of the coil wires thus lock the coils together and as well provides the top and bottom portions of the unit. Surrounding the edge of the mattress at top and bottom locations is a continuous rectangular shaped wire of heavy metal as indicated at 22. A small Wire is coiled about this large wire or frame in the manner as indicated at 23, and upon lying adjacent the unit structures I3 will be linked to include the wires thereof in the manner as shown at 23'. In this manner the other units are held against lateral displacement.
Over the springs and the padded portions there is extended a covering 24 which has
separable side portions25 and 26 which can be locked together by a slide fastener arrangement 21 extending about three sides of the mattress. The upper side of the mattress however, as shown in Fig. 1, is not separable as the slide fastener arrangement extends only over the three sides.
With the slide fastener 21 adjusted to the open position, the portions of the
covering24 can be separated from the spring arrangement so as to provide easy access of vacuum cleaning tools or a cleaning cloth for the cleaning of the spring arrangement.
The upper and lower corners or edges of the mattress are connected with the respective top and bottom padding portions in the manner as indicated at 2B. This can be effected with a stitching as indicated at 28.
It should be apparent that there has been provided a spring mattress having separable top and bottom padded portions which can be easily separated from the spring arrangement by the mere pulling of a slide fastener surrounding the three sides of the mattress and in order that access can be readily had to the spring arrangement so that it can be easily and thoroughly cleaned.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A coil spring unit comprising two coil springs, the outer convolutions of which having bent portions and free ends, the free ends of the convolutions of one coil spring extending to and engaging with the bent portions of the convolutions of the other of said coil springs, whereby relative movement of the ends of the outer convolution of one coil spring and the free ends of the outer convolutions of the other coil spring is prevented.
