Description

1952 R. I. CALHOUN PAINT ROLLER JACKET CLEANER Filed Feb. 2, 1951 INVENTOR ROY LCALHOUN fi/// fl/ ATTORNEYS Patented Nov. 4, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PAINT ROLLER JACKET CLEANER Boy I. Calhoun, Milwaukee, Wis.

Application February 2, 1951, Serial No. 209,174

1 Claim.

This invention relates to an implement for reconditioning the paint applying jackets of paint rollers.

An important object of my present invention is to provide an implement for receiving the paint applying jacket or sleeve directly from a paint roller, without the necessity of touching the jacket by hand, the ccntruction of the implement being such that the same can be economically manufactured and placed upon the market at a very low cost.

Another object of my invention is the provision of a hand implement for reconditioning the paint applying jackets of paint rollers, which merely embodies a rod bent to form a body portion for receiving the jacket and an extended shank having secured thereto a manipulating handle.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which drawing,

Figure 1 is a side elevational view of my improved hand implement.

Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1, with a paint applying jacket or sleeve to be reconditioned placed on the implement, the handle of the implement being shown in section.

Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.

Figure 4. is a side elevational view partly in section illustrating my improved device fitted against a paint roller for receiving the paint applying jacket therefrom.

Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter I generally indicates my improved hand implement for receiving and holding a paint applying jacket J to be reconditioned from a paint roller R.

The paint roller B. and its jacket J will not be described in detail, as the same are of a type now commonly found in the open market. The jacket J can be constructed from sheepskin.

The improved implement I is preferably formed from a length of steel rod of the desired diameter, and this rod is bent to form

spaced legs

5 and 5 connected at their outer ends by a transversely extending bight portion 1. The

leg

6 has formed on its inner end, the longitudinally extending

shank

8, and this shank is in longitudinal alignment with the axis of the

legs

5 and 6. The

leg

5 has its inner end terminating in an inwardly directed arm 9, which terminates short of the

shank

8. The

leg

5 is of a resilient nature so that the same can be sprung toward the

leg

6. Rigidly anchored to the

shank

8, is a hand 2 grip Iii for facilitating the manipulation of the implement I. It is to be noted, however, that the

shank

8 extends rearwardly of the handle 16, for a purpose which will be set forth.

In the use of my implement, the transverse bight portion l, is placed flat against the end of a paint roller R, as shown in Figure 4, after which the paint roller and the implement are moved as a unit and tapped against a solid object, so that the jacket J of the roller will slide onto the

legs

5 and 6. The

resilient leg

5 will form a friction grip on the jacket to prevent accidental displacement thereof from off of the implement.

The

legs

5 and 6 with the jacket can be now immersed in a can or jar of cleaning fluid and the hands of the operator can be placed on opposite sides of the hand grip I0, and moved back and forth to rapidly spin the implement and the jacket in opposite directions. This will facilitate the removing of the paint from the jacket in conjunction with the cleaning fluid and after the paint has been dissipated, the implement and the acket can be removed from the fluid and. again rotated back and forth by the hands to throw the cleaning fluid off of the jacket.

If desired, a hand drill, or the like, can be connected to the extended end of the mandrel to permit the more rapid rotation of the implement.

Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit or the scope of this invention but what I claim as new is:

An implement for reconditioning the cylindrical jackets of paint rollers and adapted to receive the jacket directly from the paint roller comprising a jacket receiving body portion including a pair of spaced parallel legs and a transverse connecting bight portion atjthe forward ends of the legs for fitting flat against one end of the roller, an outwardly projecting shank formed on the inner end of one of the legs and extending a material distance beyond the legs and in longitudinal alignment with the longitudinal axis of the body, and a hand grip secured to said shank of a circular shape in crosssection, whereby the handle can be placed between the hands of an operator and rolled back and forth.
