FASTENER FOR THE MEETING-RAILS OF SASFHES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,706, dated April 10, 1883.

To all whom it may concern.'

Be it known that we, ANDREW M. RANTZ, a citizen of Sweden, now residing at Oambridgeport, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, and CHARLES L. EN- GELHARDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in Win- Io dow-Sash Fasteners; and we do hereby declare that the same are fully described in the following specification and illustrated in the accom panyiug drawings.

This invention relates to improvements in window-sash fasteners, and it is' carried ont as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a plan view of the de vice shown in a locked position. Fig. 2 repzo resents a l'ront elevation of it shown as locked. Fig. 3 represents a vertical section on the line A B, shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 4 represents a side elevation of the device shown in the act of locking and securing the sashes together.

In the drawings, a. represents the lower por- 3o tion Aof the outer window-sash, and b represents the upper portion of the inner windowsash, as usual. To the sash a is secured the striker a', provided on its upright part with a slotted perforation, a, for the reception of the 3 5 latch-lever, hereinafter to be described. To

the sash b is secured the plate c," provided with vertical bearings c' c,through the upper ends of which passes the screw, pin, or rivet 0"', as shown.

d is the latch-lever, journaled on the pin 0 between the bearings c c. The outer end of the latch-lever d is provided with a hooked projection, d', adapted to be swung into the slotted perforation a on the striker a when the sashes a and b are brought in proximity to each other, and thus to effect a strong and secure lock between them by moving the latchlever d from the position shown in Fig. 4 to y the position shown in Fig. 3, which is done by depressing the `handle d, that forms a rear extension of the latch-lever d, as shown in said ii gures. For the purpose ot' automatically retaining the latch-lever l in its locked position, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, we employ the lock cam or lever h, hinged at h tothe plate c, and provided with a thumb-piece, 7L, by means of which it is operatedto be swung back against the rear portion ofthe latchlever d, as' shown in Figs. 1,2, and 3, and by means of which the latch-lever is prevented from being detached from the striker until the lock cam or lever h is swung to one side of the 1atchlever cl, which latter is then automatically caused to swing backward on its fulcruni-pin 0 by the influence of a suitable spring-wire, g, which is coiled around the pin 0r screw 0', with its free ends resting against the rear' of the vertical bearings c o and its looped end pressing on the under side of the handle or extension d, as shown in Figs. 3

and 4.
