Description
April 22, 1969 .1. ALONSO CHILDREN'S STREAMER TOY Sheet of2 Filed D60. 19, 1966 INVENTOR EYE April 22, 1969 J. ALONSO CHILDREN'S
STREAMER TOY Sheet2 of 2 Filed Dec. 19, 1966 United States Patent 3,439,446 CHILDRENS STREAMER TOY Jos Alonso, 23-24 Cambridge Road, Fair Lawn, NJ. 07410 Filed Dec. 19, 1966, Ser. No. 602,618 Int. Cl. A63h 1 32, /00 US. C]. 46-51 4 Claims This invention relates to childrens toys and more particularly to new and useful improvements in a streamer toy.
A primary object of the present invention is to provide a toy with streamers adapted to be swished by movement of the hand and which combines the features of skill and sound making.
Another object is to provide a streamer toy wherein an elastic band is utilized as a launching device.
Yet another object is to provide a streamer toy of this kind in which the sound effect is produced by the normal operation of the toy.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a streamer toy that is amusing and entertaining, simple in construction and economical to manufacture.
For further comprehension of the invention and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a streamer toy embodying one form of the invention.
FIG. 2 is an enlarged cross sectional view taken on the plane of the line 2-2 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a perspective view showing the toy in use.
FIG. 4 is a disassembled detail perspective view showing modified forms of streamers.
FIG. 5 is a fragmentary view similar to FIG. 2 showing the streams of FIG. 4 anchored to the ball element.
FIG. 6 is a perspective view of a streamer toy embodying a modified form of the invention partly raveled.
FIG. 7 is a top plan view thereof shown partly turned in dash lines.
FIG. 8 is a front elevational view showing the streamers in dash lines.
FIG. 9 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 99 of FIG. 8.
FIG. 10 is a perspective view of the streamer toy of FIG. 6 with the streams wound therearound in inoperative stored position.
FIG. 11 is a top perspective view of a fragment of streamers embodying another modified form of the invention.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, in FIG. 1 a streamer toy is shown and indicated generally at 10'. The
toy10 comprises a plurality of narrow, elongated, thin,
flexible streamers12 formed of suitable plastic material such as polyethylene, polystyrene, cellophane and the like and may be colored. The streamers are preferably squarecornered at one
end13 and pointed at the
other end14. The streamers are gathered together in juxtaposition at the square-
cornered end13 and inserted through a
slot16 in a
rubber ball18 and anchored inside the ball by means of an
elongated nail20 driven into the material of the ball and through the
ends13 of the streamers at right angles thereto as seen in FIG. 2. The
ball18 is preferably colored red. An endless
elastic band24 has one end looped around a round
wooden bar26 and its other end inserted through a
slot28 in the opposite side of the
ball18 and anchored therein by a
nail30 driven into the material of the ball and through the inner end of the elastic band. The
bar26 serves as a handle for manipulating the toy.
3,439,446 Patented Apr. 22, 1969 In using the toy, the
bar26 is grasped by the fingers of the hand of the user as shown in FIG. 3. The toy is then subjected to a quick to and fro jerky movement which causes the
elastic band24 to expand as indicated by the
arrow32 and the streamers to fly outwardly striking against each other thereby creating a swishing sound which is pleasant to hear and at the same time causing the streamers to assume snake-like formations or loops as indicated by the
arrows34.
In FIGS. 4 and 5, modified forms of streamers are shown anchored to the ball 18'. Four streamers indicated at 36, 38, 40, 42 are shown which are similar in construction and shape to the
streamers12 of FIG. 1 but one end thereof, the square cornered end, of each is perforated. The
outside streamers36 and 42 are outstruck near the extreme end edges forming a
barb44 extending in one direction, and are instruck at a point slightly inwardly of
barb44 forming a
barb46 extending in the opposite direction. The
inner streamers38 and 40 are formed with
round holes48 remote from the extreme end edge thereof in line with the
instruck barbs46.
In use, the streamers are placed side by side in juxtaposition With the perforated ends overlapped and the
instruck barbs46 inserted through the
holes48 in the adjacent
inner streamers38 and 40. With the streamers in this joined condition, the joined ends are inserted through the
slot16 in the
ball18, the
projecting barbs44 becoming embedded in the material of the ball as shown in FIG. 5, thereby anchoring the streamers to the ball.
In FIGS. 6 to 10, inclusive, a modified form of
streamer toy10" is shown. The
toy10 consists of a pair of
elongated streamers12" similar to
streamers12 of FIG. 1 but with
curved ends13 and 14". A rectangular
wooden block50 pivotally supports one end, the
end13", in a
slit52 formed centrally of the block, intersecting the sides and one end thereof, by means of a double headed
pivot pin54 extending through transverse aligned
holes56 in the block centrally thereof and loosely through the
slit52 and material of the
ends13" of the streamers. An
elongated round handle58 is secured at one end to the solid end of the
block50 centrally thereof by means of a
wood screw60 extending loosely through a
central bore62 in the handle and threaded into the solid end of the block at the center thereof. By reason of this construction, the
block50 can swivel on the
handle58 as shown in FIG. 7.
In use, the handle is grasped by the fingers of the user and the toy given an up and down jerky movement whereby the
block50 swivels and the streamers assume snakelike formations or loops as shown in FIG. 3. When not in use, the
streamers12" are wound around the
block50 transversely thereof as shown in FIG. 10 and may be held against enravelment by an elastic band or the like.
In FIG. 11, the modified form of streamers 12x are formed with
holes64 adjacent the
ends14" thereof and with
outstruck barbs66 inwardly of the
holes64 and adapted to be inserted through the aligned
holes64 and bent over the edges thereof to hold the streamers against ravelment, when not in use.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A streamer toy comprising a shaped body having a sloted portion and a plurality of juxtaposed elongated flexible plastic streamers having one of their ends secured in the sloted portion of the body and the other of their ends free, and means associated with the body for manipulating said streamers, the shaped body is in the form of a rectangular wooden block with the slot therein intersecting one end and the sides thereof, the streamers pivotally anchored in said slot, and wherein said manipulating means includes an elongated handle swivelly Secured at one end to the solid end of the block whereby upon manual movement of the block up and down, the block swivels and the streamers assume snake-like formations and loops.
2. A streamer toy as defined in claim 1 wherein said pivotal anchorage includes a pivot pin extending transversely, loosely through the block, slit and ends of the streamers.
3. A streamer toy as defined in claim 1, wherein the streamers are adapted to be wound around the block when not in use.
4. A streamer toy as defined in
claim3 wherein the streamers have aligned holes adjacent the unattached ends thereof and have outstruck barbs inwardly of the holes for coaction with the holes upon winding the streamers in looped formation.
