ready enjoined so to prevent contamination, and wherein external manipulation thereof places them into operative condi tion. l
. Other objects are to provide a partially assembled bulk parenteral solution container and administration set which is simple in design, inexpensive to manufacture, rugged inconstruction, easy to use and efficient in operation.
These and other objects will be readily evident upon a study of the following specification and the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIG. 1 is a side cross-sectional view of the invention.
FIG. 2 is an exploded perspective view of the invention.
FIG. 3 is a side cross-sectional view of a modified form of the invention.
Referring now tothe drawing in detail, the reference numeral represents a partially assembled bulk parenteral solution container and administration set according to the present invention, wherein there is an administrative cap 11 over the
mouth12 of a
bottle13.
The cap 11 includes
plastic body14 having
internal thread15 engaged on external thread 16 of the bottle. A
rubber plug17 having a thin
central diaphragm18 is fitted into the bottle mouth sealing the
bottle interior19. A
central needle20 integrally formed with the
body14 carries a
passage21 therethrough which communicates with a
drip chamber22 made of transparent plastic and fitted over a
nipple23 formed on the body. Another
passage24 extends through the
needle20 and is
parallel topassage21; the
passage24 communicating with an
air filter unit25 formed on the body. The
unit25 includes a
check valve26 comprised of
steel ball27 normally urged by a
compression coil spring28 against a
valve seat29 so to normally close the
passage24. A
filter screen30 is fitted over the end of the
passage24 and secured in position by a
removable bezel31. Q
The
drip chamber22 is connected to one end of a
hose32 having a manually
closable clamp33 along the length thereof for purpose of squeezing the hose so to seal the hose passage fully or in part for controlling flow volume therethrough.
The
bottle13 includes a
circular flange34 integrally formed around the
neck35 thereof. A
flexible sleeve36 has a central opening at one end fitted around the cap 11; the cap having a
bead37 which fits into a
groove38 of the sleeve. The opposite end of the sleeve has'an upward turned
edge39, which is forced down to snap around the
flange34, so that the sleeve can not be accidentally removed during operational use, thereby sealing the contents from contamination. The
sleeve36 can be made integral with the
body14.
In preoperative use, the device is initially in the position shown in FIG. 1, with
edge39 in the sealed solid linepositio'n. Upon rotation of the body relative to the bottle the
threads15 and 16 cause the body to descend, causing the needle to punc-' ture the diaphragm, and allowing the bottle contents to flow out of the
passage21 when the device is inverted. The
valve26 prevents escape of the bottle contents out of the
air filter unit25;
The air filter bezel is removable for adding medication into the cap which will be prevented from flowoutward from the air filter by the checkvalve.
In a modified
construction50 shown in FIG. 3, the cap 51 is vertically, axially slidable on the bottle instead of being rotatable as above described. In this form of the invention, the cap includes a relativel thin integral formed
sleeve52. The cap 51 and the
sleeve2 are both made of resilient material and are integrally formed together. The interior side wall of the cap includes an upper
circular groove57a and a lower circular groove 57b. The bottle includes on the outer side of the bottle neck an upper bead 55 and a
lower head56. Prior to operative use, an upturned resilient lower edge 62 of the
sleeve52 is snapped around a
flange53 integrally formed on the bottle (see dotted lines). In operative use, the cap is simply pushed axially causing the cap groove to disengage bead 55 from the groove 57b. As the cap descends, the groove 57b snaps over
bead56, while at the same-instant, the needles 60 and 61 pierce the diaphragm. The cap carries
drip chamber58 and
air filter59, each with its own needle 60 and 61 respectively. The needles pierce the plug diaphragm upon downward travel, thus allowing outward flow of the formerly sealed bottle content. The
air filter59 is provided with a valve similar to the
ball valve27 of FIG. 1 to prevent flow outward through the filter.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it is understood that such changes will be within the spirit and scope of the present invention.
