TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Beit known that I, LEWIS WILSON, of'v Ovid, in the county of Seneca, and Statcof New York, have invented a new and improved Spring-Bed Bottom; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,.a.nd exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in whieh`- i Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved bed-bottom. Figure 2 is a longitudinal section taken in a vertical plane through the same. v4Figure 3 is an elevation of one end ot' the bed-bottom. Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional view in detail, showing the manner of attaching and supporting the ends` 4of the" slats.

4 Similar letters of reference indicate. corresponding parts in the several figures. l The nature vof my invention consists in suspending the slats constituting the bed-bottom from rollers or rolling bars by means of strips of cloth, which are wound upon these rollers, and in combining springs. therei,

with in such manner-as to afford elastic supports for the slats,4and to keep them all ina horizontal plane, and, at the same time, allow them to rise and descend together, as will be hereinafter described.

To enable others skilled in the art to understand my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.

In the accompanying drawings, A represents a four-post frame, composed of four posts secured together by longitudinal and transverse hars, as shown in the drawings. This forms a frame `which is adapted for receiving and supporting the several parts composing the spring-bed bottom, Aand which can be applied to or removed from a bedstead at pleasure. B I3 represent two horizontal transverse rollers' or rolling hars, having their end l hearings in the four posts of the frame A. .These rollers have strips a a,.of canvas, nailed upon them, and

extending from end to end, as shown in fig. 1, which strips are wound upon their respective rollers, 'andV provided with hooks b I1, by means of which strips e of canvas can be attached to or detached from the said strips a a, as shown. .The strips ec are secured fast to thc ends ofthe slats D D by slitting these slats, inserting the edges of the'strips of canvas into Athe slits, and then securing the parts together bysmall nails, as shown.

Near the extremities of each roller B annular grooves are formed, so as to reduce the diameter of the rollers, and adapt them for receiving bands or straps d d, and allow the latter to roll up and unroll without interfering` with the canvas strips a a. The straps are securedupon the rollers Vso as to wind upon and unwind in opposite directions to the strips a a; and these straps are also secured to the ends of dat springsggfwhichare fastened to cross-bars of frame A beneath the rollers B.

It will be seen, from the above description, that the slats D are suspended from two rollersB B by means of lexible but inelastic strips, and that these slats are sustained by means of the springs g g, acting4 through `the medium of the straps d, rollers B, and said ilexible strips. This arrangement will keep the sla-ts horizontal, and prevent them from tilting laterally; and, while this is the case,the slotted bottom is allowed to move freely in an endwise direction, and to rise and descend more or less, according to the weight which is upon it.

I would here state that, while my invention is designed for bed-bottoms, it is also equally applicahle for the l purpose of a seat for vehicles. I do not, therefore, limit myself to its application for the purpose of a bedhottom, but also intend its use for the purpose of a scat wherever a seat may be required.`

Having described my invention,'what I claim as new, and desire to sccure'hy Letters Patent, is-f l. A spring-bed bottom, the slats of which are suspended from rollers B B, by-lneans of strips of cloth, in` combination with springs gg and the connecting-straps d d, arranged substantiallyr as described.
