GnonGnii. AKRinGE, or HARTSFIELD, GEORGIA. 1 sA-sH; HOLDER AND FASTENER,

tion. 7

For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section showing a sash in closed position and a fastener embodying the invention in a position holding said sash closed. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, the sash being raised to the limit-of its upward movement. Fig. 3 shows the fastener or holder cooperating with the sash, the latter arranged in a position intermediate its extremes of movement. 7

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the followin description and indicated in all the views 0 the drawings by the same reference characters.

. The invention consists of a novel form of sash holder or fastener for windows.

In the drawings the numeral 1 designates the window-frame, and the numeral 2 a window-stop.

The

numeral

3 denotes the sash, and the

numeral

4 the fastener or holder, comprising the invention. The

fastener

4 comprises a dog pivoted near one end, as shown at 5, the opposite end of the dog being ada ted to coact with the

sash

3 in order to hol the same in a predetermined position. The dog is pivoted between its ends to the window-stop, and the longer end of the do is formed at its outer extremity with a

hoo

6, adapted to engage over the top rail of the

sash

3 in order to lock said sash down in closed position. The o posite end portion of the .dog 4-is forme with a notch 7, said notch being adapted to receive the lower rail of the sash when said sash is raised into the position shown in Fig. 2. In this instance the dog Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed October 2,1905 Serial No. 281,042;

' I Patented iT une 19,1906;

will be disposed in an approximately vertical position and will rigidly support the sash in the open position before described.

The formation of the notch 7 is such as to provide spaced points 8 adjacent thereto, and these points are adapted to bite into one of the side or vertical bars of the sash frame in order to position the sash and hold the samesecurely when it is disposed at a pointbetween its extremes of movement. Fig. 3 shows the points 8 en agin with the sash as above mentioned, and, if d esirable, the bar, which is engaged'by the points, 8, may be formed with a vertical kerf or recess to receive an engaginf'plate or like means to take up wear cause points 8.

It will be understood that when the window-

sash

3 is down in closed position at one extreme of its movement the

hook

6 will engage over the top rail of the sash on pivotal movement of the

fastener

4, and said sash will be held closed. When the sash is at the opposite extreme of its movement or raised to open the window, the notch 7 coacts to support the sash, as before premised. The points 8 engage'the sash only when the same is arran ed in an intermediate position.

The d evice consists of a single part which by the coaction of the may be very cheaply manufactured and which when secured in position on a windowframe will efiectively hold the window-sash in the desired position. The

member

4 is alsoreadily operable to accomplish its functions, and this is a desirable feature in a device of this class.

Having thus described the invention, what is claime as new is I In a sash-fastener, the combination of a window-frame, and a sash movable therein, of a pawl or

dog

4 pivotally mounted near one end on the window-frame, said dog being provided at one end with a hook facing the pivot and at its other end with an angular notch slightly offset from the pivot and facing away from the same, the edges of the said notch providing biting surfaces and the notch and hook also facing in opposite directions with respect to the median line of the dog, the hook at one end of the do being designed to take over the upper e ge of the wmdow-sash to prevent the same from being raised, the angular notch being designed to 5 receive the lower edge of seid sash whereby to sustain the sash in a raised position and the ed es of the. notch providing means for biting into a side of the sash whereby to sustain the latter in an intermediate position, as and for the purpose set forth.

In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.

GEORGE H. AKRIDGE. Witnesses:

J. H. WIMBERLY, JOHN G. GLovER.
