Be it known that I, SAMUEL BRILLINGER, of Clarence Oentrefiu the county of fErie, and State o'f New York, have invented certain newk and useful Improvements 1n Pumps; and I do declare that the following is a lfull and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of inder in section, and part ofthe inner cylinder broken away.

rIhe object of my invention is to provide a doubleacting pump without using valves, and consists essen- ,.tially in employing a rock-chamber, in a cylinder or case, provided with suitable ports, and combining therewith a reciprocating -piston for receiving and expelling the water, as hereinafter set forth. 4 In the drawings- Y 1 A' represents the outer cylinder, or case, the hollow interior of which is conical, enclosing a similar coneshaped chamber, B, which packs closer by being pushed or worked further in, when, by constant friction, it

wears away. To lessen this friction of the chamber, which works with atransverse rocking motion, I hol- -low out a section of the centre, leaving an annular space all around between it and the case, shown at b b.-

C and D represent two water-passages, or pipes, arranged parallel to the case A, and united therewith by elbow-pipes e f g h. 1

E represents the plunger, or piston, and t', the rod,- the latter having a direct action by means of forked arm F, which is connectedwith crank L.

This rod is fastened to a cross-piece, j, and runs through guide k.

i forked ends enclose `the crank-pin n, which, in itsrcvolutions, produces the desired rocking motion,4 the arl rangement of which is clearly shown in the drawings.

This action turns thechamber B, and thereby brings rocates.

In order to get the rocking motion vof the chamber- 'its ports in the right position to receive and discharge the water at the exact moment, as theplunger recip The crank-pin, therefore, does not act eccentrically, but works exact, striking the inside of the forks of lever J at the exact moment to raise and depress said lever, and thereby move the rock-chamber with entire precision. f

The operation is as follows: As-the piston E is forced down, as shown in lig. 2, the chamber B is half turned, bringing the hole c opposite elbow-port g and hole d, ou the opposite side and end of piston to opening of elbow h. Therefore,

ber B` is immediately half tui-ned, and the action is exactly'reversed, thus producing a double action.

- The essential principle in this pump, it will be noticed, is Athe combination of the rock-chamber B and reciprocating plunger E, the former taking the place of valves by alternately opening and closing the ports, and the latter simply drawing and Aexpelling the water.

This combination I believe to be new.

I am aware that double-acting pumps are common, but I believe that my methodof producing the result is novel, and from its peculiar arrangement possesses many advantages over other pumps Besides saving in packing, and working without valves, it is less lial ble to clog than any pump I am acquainted with. It will work through, dirt, and even sawdust, without clogging, which valve-pumps cannot do.

It will be valuable, I am satisfied, for any work that l pumps can be put to, but it is peculiarly adapted for steam-engines, for reasons above stated. It will work in any desired position, either horizontal or'vertical..
