Africa was the world's second-largest and second-most populous continent after Asia. The continent was surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, the Indian Ocean to the southeast and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. The continent included Madagascar and various archipelagos. Africa had a large quantity of natural resources and food resources, including diamonds, sugar, salt, gold, iron, silver, and tropical fruit.

History[]

Africa had too many hungry insects,[1] and elephants.[3]

The legend of Zerzura, the Shining City located on the magical island of Kerma lying off the coast of Africa, was spoken of by pirates and was also mentioned in Capt. J. Ward's book, My Lyfe Amonge the Pyrates. Captain Ward's book would be read by Jack Sparrow, who considered Zerzura one of his favorite legends, and Cutler Beckett, who became the Director of West African Imports and Exports for the East India Trading Company as well as the head of the entire midwestern EITC African division. Beckett was posted to an office at the port of Calabar, located on the Bight of Benin, midway down the western coast of Africa, which was rapidly becoming the main port for the most valuable African EITC cargo, which was slaves. First Mate Jack Sparrow sailed the EITC merchant vessel Fair Wind to Calabar to meet with Beckett, who then promoted Sparrow as captain of the Wicked Wench, which later became the pirate vessel Black Pearl.[1]

During the quest for the Shadow Gold, Captain Jack Sparrow sailed the Black Pearl to find Ammand the Corsair.[3]

By the war against piracy led by Lord Cutler Beckett of the East India Trading Company, Africa was drawn onto a map of the world created in the EITC headquarters in Port Royal,[4][5][6][7] along with a smaller map in the captain's cabin of the Endeavour.[8]

Behind the scenes[]

Africa was first depicted on a map of the world in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.[4] The map would also be featured in the 2006-2007 reference books Pirates of the Caribbean: The Visual Guide,[5] The Complete Visual Guide,[6] and The Secret Files of the East India Trading Company.[7] In the books by Rob Kidd, Africa was first mentioned in Legends of the Brethren Court: Wild Waters,[3] prior to making its first appearance in Day of the Shadow.[2] The name "Afrique" was first used by Christophe-Julien de Rapièr in The Price of Freedom by A. C. Crispin.[1]

In Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio's screenplay for Dead Man's Chest, while Cutler Beckett talks to Elizabeth Swann about a "chest of value" among his desires, the script details the huge world map on the wall of Beckett's office, "-- incomplete, parts of South America, Africa, Australia only sketched."[9] However, Australia was identified as "Hollandia Nova" in the final cut of the film.[4]
