- "We go west."
"Why the devil would we head west?"
"You have cargo bound for Antigua, do you not?"
"Bugger that!" - ―Amenirdis and Jack Sparrow[src]
Antigua was an island in the Lesser Antilles. It was one of the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean region. At some point prior to Jack Sparrow's teenage adventures, Antigua became one of many colonies governed by England, Great Britain and the British Empire.
History[]
- "How many more days to reach Antigua?"
"A few days, perhaps a week, at most. Depending on the wind, as you've doubtless learned by now." - ―Amenirdis and Jack Sparrow[src]
During the quest for the Sword of Cortés, Jack Sparrow and the crew of the Barnacle sailed for Antigua to buy some supplies.[1][2] Jack's crew picked up some empty glass jars in Antigua, which Jack insisted might come in handy someday, but actually served no other purpose than occupying space below deck.[3] About ten years later, when Jack served as an merchant seaman in the East India Trading Company, the Wicked Wench sailed from Calabar for the New World on her maiden voyage as an EITC merchant ship under his command as captain. When she approached the Lesser Antilles, Jack saw Antigua in the distance through his spyglass.[4] On the Wench's third voyage, she made port in Antigua, where she took a cargo of molasses and sugar bound for Liverpool. Two of the ship's passengers, the Zerzuran princess Amenirdis and her bodyguard Tarek, could not leave the ship, for the fear of being arrested by the local authorities as runaway slaves. The crewman Chamba, who was a runaway slave himself, was allowed to go ashore, but he was under strict orders to stay with his shipmates all the time. A few days later the Wench sailed for the Bahamas.[5]
When Captain Hector Barbossa's cursed crew kidnapped Elizabeth Swann from Port Royal, Commodore James Norrington studied the map of the Lesser Antilles, including Antigua, trying to establish the most likely course the pirates took. Not satisfied with Norrington's plan the young blacksmith Will Turner slammed his axe into Norrington's desk, through the map, cutting Guadeloupe in half.[6]
Behind the scenes[]
- Antigua was first pictured on a map in the 2003 film Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.[6] Although mentioned, Antigua made its first appearance in the 2011 novel The Price of Freedom by A. C. Crispin.[4]
- The 74-foot Antigua-based schooner St. Peter played one of the background ships in Port Royal in The Curse of the Black Pearl,[6] Shrimper's ship in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and one of the background ships in Tortuga in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.[7][8]
