- "I hoarded my money for months to save for a time when I could take you and leave the Bride and your father forever. Take you someplace nice. Hispaniola, maybe. Or Boston. Or Newfoundland."
- ―Laura Smith to Arabella Smith[src]
Hispaniola was an island in the Caribbean that was part of the Greater Antilles. Located north-east of Port Royal, between Cuba to the west and Puerto Rico to the east, Hispaniola was the most populous island in the West Indies, and the region's second largest in area, after the island of Cuba. Hispaniola was the site of the first European colonies founded by the voyages of Christopher Columbus in 1490s.
History[]

Hispaniola's main port
- "That was Captain Torrents, you idiot. The infamous and dreaded...?"
"Not ringing any bells."
"The most notorious pirate this side of Hispaniola?"
"Oh, wait... Nope. Sorry." - ―Arabella Smith and Jack Sparrow[src]
After 1697, the island was divided into two colonies, one Spanish and one French. The French colony became known as Saint Dominique.
By the quest for the Sword of Cortés, the infamous and dreaded Captain Torrents became known as the most notorious pirate on the side of Hispaniola. While this was known to Arabella Smith, a young barmaid, it was unknown to the young adventurer Jack Sparrow.[1]
The Spanish part of the island remained the seat of Spanish power in the Caribbean, since this was where the governor of Port Royal went to make a treaty at some point after Hector Barbossa's mutiny against Jack Sparrow aboard the Black Pearl.[2] Several members of Barbossa's cursed crew were escaped slaves from Hispaniola.[3][4]
At some point before the quest for the Fountain of Youth, Jack Sparrow and Angelica became involved in a con together in St. Dominique, and each attempted to double-cross the other, notably with Angelica unsuccessfully having tried to kill Jack there.[5] A few years prior to the quest, Hector Barbossa and the Black Pearl was off the coast of Hispaniola when they came under attack by Blackbeard's ship, the Queen Anne's Revenge.[6]
Prior to the search for the Trident of Poseidon, Henry Turner spent his life studying the myths of the sea, having drawn several recorded encounters with the sea snakes, at least one being found off the coast of Hispaniola, having a long mouth with sharp teeth that could rip prey apart, which Henry found at least one lost tooth on a beach near Jagged Cove, and that it probably lurked at the bottom of the ocean floor and surfaces to eat people or other fish. In his handwritten drawings, Henry spelled Hispaniola as "Hispanola".[7]
Behind the scenes[]
- Hispaniola first appeared in the Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl video game in 2003.[citation needed] It would first be mentioned in the 2006 reference book Pirates of the Caribbean: The Visual Guide,[3] later reprinted through The Complete Visual Guide in 2007,[4] while its first in-universe mention would occur in Jack Sparrow: The Coming Storm by Rob Kidd.[1]
- Hispaniola appears in Tim Powers' novel, On Stranger Tides, which was used as the basis for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
- In Terry Rossio's original screenplay for Dead Men Tell No Tales, Hispaniola, called by its archaic name San Domingo, was a main location.[8]
- One of the Dead Men Tell No Tales concept artwork by James Carson included various handwritten drawings by young Henry Turner, including one sea serpent that was found off the coast of "Hispanola".[7] Whether this misspelling was on purpose to show Henry misspelled, or if it was simply a mistake on Carson's part, is uncertain.
