Swinub

Swinub (Japanese: ウリムー, HepburnUrimuu) (SWY-nub[1]) is a Ice/Ground-type Pokémon introduced in Generation II.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Swinub is a tiny Pokémon with a pig like nose. It is tan with brown stripes running down its fur. Swinub has feet, but its fur hides them completely. Swinub are known for scurrying across the ground, and bumping into things accidentally. It also has a little tail.

Behavior[]

Swinub have very keen senses of smell. They are often trained to locate rare mushrooms that only grow underground. In the wild, Swinub use their smell to forage for their favorite food—truffles. Swinub also have a talent for sniffing out concealed hot springs under ice. Though they themselves have little use for such springs, they do enjoy grazing on the plant life that grows around them. Ski resorts and inns often are built near areas with large numbers of Swinub, banking on the hopes that there are hot springs nearby to draw in tourists. Swinub have rather poor vision, relying mostly on their noses to find their way. When they smell something particularly enticing, they will dash quickly towards it, unaware of any obstacles in their way. Their thick coats of long fur keep them warm on the ice, insulating them from the cold. Although their favorite food is mushrooms, they aren't very picky eaters and will consume nearly anything edible that they manage to locate with their noses.

Evolution[]

Swinub evolves into Piloswine at level 33, and can further evolve into Mamoswine by learning the move Ancient Power.

Anime[]

Dawn Swinub

Dawn's Swinub.

In the anime, Dawn acquires a Swinub she met in Mr. Backlot's garden, after it saved her and the group's Pokémon from Team Rocket. This Swinub eventually evolved into a Piloswine and then into a Mamoswine two episodes later. Now at this stage, it has acquired gigantic strength, but has also become very aggressive towards Dawn and her Pokémon. Dawn is still eager to train it, however. As revealed in the Pokémon Anime, Swinub has an enormous appetite.

Trainers with a Swinub[]

Trivia[]

  • As seen in Spring Fever and Hot Springing a Leak!, Swinub are able to smell out hot water straight from the source.
    • This, however, is canon only for the anime, and might not be faithful to the games.

Origin[]

Swinub may be based on a wild boar piglet. It also resembles a guinea pig due to it being very small, furry, and literally being a pig. It may also be based on a groundhog, both referring to its appearance and it literally being a "ground hog".

Etymology[]

Swinub is a combination of swine and nub, referring to its nose.
