him as evidence of disloyalty,
notably by Sen. Joseph
R. McCarthy, who in 1950 called him "a known associate and
collaborator with Communists." Under pressure from McCarthy, the
State Department dismissed
him in 1951; he was reinstated by a unanimous ruling of the U.S.
Supreme Court in 1956.
