Introducing the wrestling match of the year.

(Tagline)

Arm Wrestling (Japanese: 腕相撲 / 腕組み, Udezumou/Ude o kunda or Arms crossed), is a 1985 arcade game by Nintendo and a spin-off of the Punch-Out!! series. Since it was created by the same development team who made the Punch-Out!! series, Arm Wrestling features many of the same features such as a dual monitor system and quirky computer opponents.

Gameplay[]

The goal of the game is to become the World Arm Wrestling Champion by defeating as many opponents in arm-wrestling as possible. In order to achieve this title the player must compete against five different computer opponents and pin them in a timed match.

A match begins when the player taps left on the joystick (though not until they are told to do so; trying to start wrestling too soon will result in a warning on the first occasion, and an instant game over on the second occasion). During the match the player must attack the computer by pressing left on the joystick and tapping the button to increase the power of the attack. If the opponent makes a strange face accompanied by a snorting noise, it means they are about to counterattack, which can be stopped by quickly pressing the joystick to the right. In order to win a match the player must move the joystick back and forth and surprise the computer before they have a chance to counterattack. After Kabuki and Frank Jr. are defeated, players will play a bonus game. The bonus game requires players to catch a sack of money for extra points by pulling up on the joystick right when the bag is near the protagonist's head. After the player beats the fifth and final opponent the game begins again with increased difficulty.

The game is known for its obnoxious sound effects, such as the player character yelling in a low-quality something that sounds like "Polka dot polka dot polka dot polka dot", robotic laughters, and bizzare animations that foreshadow attacks. When player wins, he sometimes shouts "YAH-YAHOO!!!"

Characters[]

Playable[]

Opponents[]

  • Texas Mac, a stereotypical Texan in a cowboy hat.
  • Kabuki, a Japanese sumo wrestler.
  • Mask X, an alter ego of Bald Bull from the Punch-Out!! series.
  • Alice & Ape III, a monkey robot being controlled by a little girl via remote.
  • Frank Jr., an homage to Frankenstein's monster, as popularized in 1930s film.

Others[]

  • Money Holder, a man who introduce the opponents and sometimes drop a money bag to the player.
  • Arm Candy, the referee.

Trivia[]

  • Based on appearances (primarily the hair color), the player character is possibly the nameless challenger.
  • In the Wii version of Punch-Out! while fighting Bald Bull, in a pre-round Doc Louis will sometimes tell Mac that "If you can't beat Bald Bull, how about an arm wrestling with him?" This is a reference to the game.
