• Journeyman Electrician

  The abilities of a Journeyman Electrician include but are not limited to installing or maintaining electrical wires and equipment that are used for light, heat, or power and installing and maintaining remote control, signaling, power limited, or communication circuits or systems.

• Master Electrician

  Master Electricians are licensed to engage in installing, and when assigned, act as an administrator to ensure that an Electrical Contractor's work is in compliance with the electrical laws and rules.

• Electrical Administrator

  An Electrical Administrator ensures that the work performed is compliant with laws and regulations. Every Electrical Contractor and company must have a designated Electrical Administrator at all times. The state allows applicants to become either a General Administrator or Specialty Administrator. Specialty Administrators must pick 1 of 14 specialties, and they must be assigned to Electrical Contractors or companies of the same specialty.

Journeyman Electrician

• Pass the Journeyman Electrician exam
• Have 8,000 hours working as an electrical trainee under the supervision of a certified electrician.
• 4,000 hours of the 8,000 must be spent working in commercial or industrial installation.
• Complete 96 hours of classroom instruction

Master Electrician

• Pass the Master Electrician exam
• have been certified as a general journey level electrician by L&I for at least 4 years.

Electrical Administrator

• Pass the Electrical Administrator exam
• Submit application for Electrical Contractor
• File Change Assignment of Administrator's/Master Certificate form designating an Administrator or Master Electrician
• Obtain surety bond to the state of Washington, or arrange an assignment of savings account

Licensed electricians must complete 24 hours of continuing education each licensing period to renew. Washington has reciprocity agreements with Idaho.

Once your application has been submitted and approved by the state, they will mail you a notice with instructions on how to schedule your exam with PSI.

The Washington exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! Additionally, ANY original copyrighted reference materials are permitted to be used during the exam.
