Brooks family. - Social Networks and Archival Context

Nathan Brooks, lawyer of Concord, Mass., was born in Lincoln, Mass., in 1785, one of fourteen children of Joshua Brooks. Died in Concord, 1863. Graduated from Harvard College, 1809, then studied law at Concord office of Samuel Hoar. Legal practice largely concerned with probate. Held wide variety of organizational positions and public offices. Secretary/Treasurer of Middlesex Mutual Fire Insurance Co. in Concord for 37 years (from 1826). Director of Concord Bank; President of Middlesex Institution for Savings; Attorney of Supreme Judicial Court; Notary Public; Justice of the Peace.

(Cont.) Mass. Representative and Senator; Master in Chancery; Middlesex County Public Administrator. Brothers and half-brothers included Charles, Franklin, Hiram, Humphrey, Isaac, and Joshua. Nathan Brooks married Caroline Downes in 1819. After her death, married Mary Merrick, daughter of Tilly Merrick (1823). Two surviving children: Caroline (from first marriage); George M. (from second), who like his father became a lawyer and judge.
