The Cyan Laser (シアン・レーザーShian rēzā?), also known as the Laser form, is a transformation that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is the Color Power gained by absorbing a Cyan Wisp and its Hyper-go-on, which turns the user into a destructive laser.
Appearance[]
When using the Cyan Laser, the user transforms into a cyan laser beam that releases small, transparent, cyan cubes in their slipstream. In Sonic's case, Sonic's entire body turns into a large version of his own head with nearly no facial features, except for his eyes, which do not have pupils and are yellow.
Game appearances[]
Sonic Colors[]
The Cyan Laser made its first appearance in both the Wii version and Nintendo DSversion of Sonic Colors, and later the remaster Sonic Colors: Ultimate. In the Wii version of the game, the Cyan Laser can first be used in Tropical Resort Act 3. In the Nintendo DS version on the other hand, the Cyan Laser is the fourth Color Power introduced (not including the White Wisps) and is unlocked in Aquarium Park. In gameplay on both versions of the game, using the Cyan Laser allows the playable character to fire themselves as laser projectiles after taking aim. Any enemies or obstacles caught in the Cyan Laser's path are destroyed and when hitting things such as walls, the ceiling, the ground etc., the player will bounce off them in a perfect geometrical fashion. In addition, the Cyan Laser lets the player utilize prisms and/or optical cables.

To use the Cyan Laser in gameplay on both versions of Sonic Colors, the player must possess a Cyan Wisp. Once transformed into the Cyan Laser, the games' respective Wisp Gauge starts to deplete, and once it runs out, the playable character will revert back to normal. To extend its duration, the player has to collect more Cyan Wisps or reflect off a prism. Also, once the Cyan Laser is launched, the player cannot control the playable character's movements or change their direction, so aim is a considerable factor. Furthermore, the Cyan Laser will always move in a straight line when fired or after bouncing off surfaces, and can only be aimed in the directions the playable character is facing.
In the Wii version of the game, if the player is in an area not suited for the Cyan Laser, the Cyan Wisp will go dormant (which is illustrated by its on-screen icon sleeping), thus preventing the player from becoming the Cyan Laser. Also, when activating the Cyan Laser in the Wii version, the playable character will start spinning in midair while surrounded by cyan cubes. While this happens, the player has to aim the playable character in the direction they want to head in, though after a while, the Cyan Laser will automatically fire itself in the direction the player was aiming it in at that moment. When aiming, a dashed line will appear which shows the initial path the playable character will travel when fired. How the Cyan Laser is aimed depends on the local area's perspective: in 3D areas, the Cyan Laser can only be aimed horizontally, and in 2.5D areas, it can only be aimed vertically.
When using the Cyan Laser in gameplay on the Wii version and in Sonic Colors: Ultimate, the player has the following controls:
In the 2 Player mode in Eggman's Sonic Simulator, two players are able to combine the Cyan Laser transformation with other Color Powers, by activating the Cyan Laser and the other Color Power at the same time when they are within a certain distance, to create a new Color Power:
Cyan Laser + Cyan Laser: Two Cyan Lasers that shoot in a specified direction, spiraling around each other.
Cyan Laser + Yellow Drill: A Yellow Drill that can turn into a Cyan Laser before the Color Power ends.
Cyan Laser + Orange Rocket: An Orange Rocket that can turn into a Cyan Laser before the Color Power ends.
In the Nintendo DS version of the game, the Cyan Laser can be used in any area. When activating the Cyan Laser (which can be done by pressing ), Sonic will transform into the Cyan Laser while hovering in a stationary position. While this happens, the player has to aim Sonic in the direction they want to head in, though after a while, the Cyan Laser will automatically fire itself in the direction the player was aiming it in at that moment. When aiming, the Cyan Laser's launch angle will be displayed by a short cyan line that can be adjusted within a vertically-aligned 90 degree angle. The player can adjust the Cyan Laser's launch angle with and then launch the Cyan Laser by pressing ///.
Sonic Generations[]
In the Nintendo 3DSversion of Sonic Generations, only Modern Sonic can use the Cyan Laser. In this game, the Cyan Laser can only be used in Tropical Resort Act 2 as the Cyan Wisps can only be found there. In gameplay, using the Cyan Laser allows Sonic to fire himself as a laser projectile after taking aim. Any enemies or obstacles caught in the Cyan Laser's path are destroyed and when hitting things such as walls, the ceiling, the ground etc., the player will bounce off them in a perfect geometrical fashion. In addition, the Cyan Laser lets the player utilize blue diamonds.

In the Wii U version, PCversion and Nintendo 3DSversion of Sonic Lost World, the Cyan Laser makes an appearance. On the Wii U/PC version of the game, the Cyan Laser is first used in Windy Hill Zone 1, and on the Nintendo 3DS version, the Cyan Laser is first used in Sky Road Zone 1. Like in previous titles, using the Cyan Laser in gameplay on both versions of the game allows the playable character to fire themselves as laser projectiles after taking aim. When using the Cyan Laser in gameplay on the Wii U/PC version, the player has the following controls:
Tap the Cyan Wisp icon in the top right corner of the GamePad screen.
Aim Cyan Laser
Slide finger across the GamePad screen / Left Stick
Fire Cyan Laser
Touch character on the GamePad screen > swipe /
To activate the Cyan Laser in gameplay on the Nintendo 3DS, the player must touch the icon of the Cyan Wisp on the touchscreen. While the playable character is stationary, the player can then aim the Cyan Laser using the direction controls. For then to launch the Cyan Laser, the player must press /. The player can also cancel out the Cyan Laser before firing by touching the icon on the 3DS' lower screen. When doing so, the Cyan Laser will return to the icon.
In Team Sonic Racing, the Cyan Laser makes an appearance as a product of the Cyan WispItem Box power-ups that can be obtained on the race tracks. In this game, rather than transforming the playable character when using the Cyan Laser, the game manifests the Cyan Laser's power for the playable character to use.
To use the Cyan Laser in gameplay, the player has to press // while in possession of a Cyan Wisp. This will make the playable character fire a manifestation of the Cyan Laser from the front of their vehicle in the form of a cyan energy beam with a reach of several meters and in the direction that the playable character is facing. This laser lasts for several seconds. The player can direct the Cyan Laser at opposing racers in front of them and if they keep it long enough on one of the opponents, they will take damage and spin out of control for a while.
Other game appearances[]
Sonic Runners[]
In Sonic Runners, the Cyan Laser is an Equipable Item which the player can use during runs. In this game, using the Cyan Laser turns the user into a cyan projectile that will move straight forward through midair at high speed while drawing in nearby Crystals, Rings and Animals. Any enemies or obstacles caught in the Cyan Laser's path are also destroyed. Occasionally though, the Cyan Laser will hit prism-like objects that will either raise or lower the Cyan Laser's trajectory so that it keeps an average distance from the ground.
In order to use the Cyan Laser, the player has two options: they can either equip the Cyan Laser before a run and then activate it manually while running by pressing the Cyan Wisp icon on the screen, or they can obtain the Cyan Laser from an Item Box in the stage, which will then immediately activate. Once transformed into the Cyan Laser, the player's Wisp Gauge starts to deplete, and once it runs out, the playable character will revert back to normal. To extend its duration, the player has to collect more Cyan Laser Item Boxes. Also, once the Cyan Laser is launched, the player cannot control the playable character's movements or change their direction.
Sonic Forces: Speed Battle[]
In Sonic Forces: Speed Battle, the Cyan Laser is an Item Box power-up exclusive to Whisper. In this game, the Cyan Laser is an offensive power-up that can be used to attack opponents. This power-up can also be improved by leveling up the playable character.
Powers and abilities[]
As the Cyan Laser, the user gains the same properties as that of a real laser, allowing them to move as a living beam of energy with enough force to penetrate even the toughest of robot armor. When hitting any surfaces as the Cyan Laser, the user can also bounce off them as if they were reflective surface. That said, the user can be redirected by prisms and travel through cables as energy. The Cyan Wisp is even capable of generating an electric field when reverting back or damaging certainbosses.
While the Cyan Laser's maximum speed remains unknown, it is still a noteworthy fast form. Sonic himself has calculated that the Cyan Laser can "almost" match his own running speed,[1] which is known to reach supersonic speeds. it has even been stated that the Cyan Laser can reach speeds equal to the speed of light.[2]
Weaknesses[]
The Cyan Laser's only known weakness is that it can only be used for a few seconds and requires more Hyper-go-on from Cyan Wisps or use any Prisms the form hits (though they provide less additional time the more that are hit in one use of the form) to be maintained, however unlike most Color Powers, the Cyan Laser burns through it's Hyper-go-on a lot faster than the others and thus, requires far more of these to use the form for prolonged periods of time.
In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing, Sonic used Cyan Laser against Surge, during their confrontation, with the help of Whisper. Whisper used Prisms to send her Cyan Wisp to Sonic, allowing him to absorb its power and use the Cyan Laser. As he blitzed Surge with a barrage of attacks, she put up a shield using the Dynamo Cage's Cube mode, giving her time to figure out where he will strike from next. From there she managed to grab Sonic mid-attack and separate him from the Cyan Wisp, taking its power for herself.[3]
The Cyan Laser is the only Color Power that the Nega-Wisp Armor uses in both versions of Sonic Colors.
The jingle for when Sonic uses the Cyan Laser in all three of the games it has appeared on (Sonic Colors, Sonic Generations, and Sonic Lost World) remains the same jingle since its first appearance.
Originally, the Cyan Laser could only be controlled with the touchscreen in Sonic Lost World. However, a patch was later released which let the player control it with the analog stick and buttons as well.
