A hydralisk den
The zerg hydralisk den bears only a passing resemblance to the nests of the once peaceful slothien that the hydralisks evolved from. Containing hydralisk genetics, the structure allows larvae to morph into hydralisks.[1] Over time, the hydralisk den evolved a biological exoskeleton to protect its flesh.[2]
Game Structure[]
StarCraft[]
The hydralisk den can also provide the genetic code necessary for Muscular Augments (faster movement), Grooved Spines (longer range) and the Lurker Aspect (allows hydralisks to morph into lurkers).[1]

Researched Abilities[]
StarCraft II[]
The hydralisk den appears in StarCraft II and unlocks the hydralisk. Unlike in StarCraft: Brood War, the Lurker Aspect can no longer be researched here as it no longer exists. In Heart of the Swarm, Lurker Aspect would be replaced with the ability to morph the hydralisk den into the lurker den or impaler den as part of the hydralisk evolution mission in the campaign, with Legacy of the Void seeing the return of the lurker and lurker den to multiplayer.

Co-op Missions[]
The hydralisk den and hydralisk strains can be built Kerrigan in Co-op Missions. Kerrigan also has access to the lurker and lurker den. Additional upgrades for the hydralisk and lurker become available when Kerrigan reaches Level 6.
Stetmann can construct a mecha hydralisk den to allow him to produce and upgrade mecha hydralisks.

Development[]
The following section contains information from a previous version of StarCraft II which is no longer valid.

Early pre-texture pass render of the hydralisk den.
The hydralisk den was a straightforward revamp of the den from the previous game. Nothing significant happened after the initial creation aside from a texture pass and the addition of more little spikes to match the other buildings.[3]
The hydralisk den could transform into a deep warren/lurker den, enabling hydralisks to transform into lurkers.[4][5]
Variants[]
- Mecha hydralisk den (terran replicant)
