Scottish humanist poet and historian. Neo-latin poet, student of Rbt. Wauchope at Paris 1528, met Boece, F. Wilson at Paris, to Scotland 1522, mat. St. Andrews 1525.

Humaniste écossais. Auteur dramatique. Historien. Note de regroupement par domaine: Littératures (800).

Umanista, poeta e storico, nato a Killearn (Scozia, Stilingshire) nel 1506, morto a Edimburg nel 1582. Fuggì Scozia, dove fu prima alla corte, poi tra gli accusatori di Maria Stuarda.

Schott. humanist. Philosoph, Dichter und Historiker, 1520-1522 Studium in Paris und 1524 in St. Andrews; 1526 Lehrer in Paris, dann Erzieher eines schott. Grafen; mußte 1539 aus Schottland fliehen, Lehrer in Bordeaux; 1544-1547 in Paris; 1547-1551 Lehrer an der Univ. Coimbra in Portugal; kehrte 1560 nach Schottland zurück, Hauslehrer von Königin Maria Stuart und später ihres Sohnes Jacob VI. (später König Jacob I. von England).

Historicus en literator (afk. uit Schotland, die in Parijs had gestudeerd en leraar in Bordeaux was geworden); publiceerde in 1554 (in het Latijn) het treurspel "Jephthes, sive votum" (hetgeen o.a. inspiratiebron was voor het treurspel "Jeptha of Offerbelofte" (1659) van Joost van den Vondel); dit schooldrama heeft toendertijd grote indruk gemaakt en is van grote invloed geweest op de ontwikkeling van het Franse klassieke toneel (o.a. Racine e.a.); het toneeldrama werd eerder rond 1543 voor het eerst opgevoerd door leerlingen van het deftige Collège de Guyenne te Bordeaux o.l.v. Buchanan
