The Geffen Film Company is an American film distributor and production company founded by David Geffen, the founder of Geffen Records and future co-founder of DreamWorks SKG.
Geffen founded the company in 1982, having recruited Eric Eisner as president. The spherical logo, based on the aforementioned record-label counterpart, was created by Saul Bass. The company distributed its films through Warner Bros.
Also in 1982, the company released it's first film, Personal Best, directed by Robert Towne. Other notable films Geffen released include Risky Business, Little Shop of Horrors, Beetlejuice, and Interview with the Vampire.
In 1990, the company was renamed and reorganized as Geffen Pictures.
In 1993, Geffen struck a two-picture deal with MTV, resulting in 1996's Joe's Apartment and Beavis and Butt-Head Do America.
Geffen Pictures closed in 1998 after releasing the 1997 Neil Jordan film adaptation of The Butcher Boy. It was subsequently folded into the film divisions of Warner Bros. In 2024, the company revived the brand briefly for the release of the Beetlejuice sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
Today, most of The Geffen Film Company's library is now owned by Warner Bros., with the exception of Beavis and Butt-Head Do America, which is owned by Paramount Pictures.
