Sanded Down is an Encanto fanfiction hosted on FanFiction.Net and Archive of Our Own on July 23, 2023
. It was written by fanfic author NoonboryKedabory (Ma Fille, Junior Officers).
In it, Bruno falls victim to an unspecified sickness (implied to be a stomach virus), which has the unfortunate side effect of seizure-like visions.
On September 27th, 2022, it received a sequel hosted on Archive of Our Own, Reflections in a Cloudy Sky, which focuses on Camilo going through a similar experience.
Tropes:
- Affectionate Nickname: In addition to "Brunito" from canon, this fic also makes use of "Pepita", "Sabrinita", and "Sierrita". Bruno also has nicknames for his three daughters; "mariposa" for Stefanie, "mi vida" for Sierra, and "mija" for Sabrina.
- Appetite Equals Health: Coupled with O.O.C. Is Serious Business, the first sign that something's wrong is Bruno's absence at breakfast.
- Big Sister Instinct:
- Pepa fusses over Bruno while he's outside on the front steps, insisting the outside germs/allergens will make it worse.
- Stefanie is quick to prevent Sierra's emetophobia from being triggered.
- Bilingual Bonus: One of the rats is named Queso, which is the Spanish word for "cheese".
- Calming Tea: In the third chapter, Julieta makes Bruno tea to calm him down after having a vision seizure.
- Chronic Pet Killer: Implied; in the first chapter, Alma makes note that fish don't seem to last long for Señora Pezmuerto.
- Demoted to Extra: Camilo says one word in the entire story, and Luisa, Agustín, and Mariano are nowhere to be seen.
- Fan-Created Offspring: In this fic, Bruno is shown to have three daughters of his own, named Stefanie, Sabrina, and Sierra.
- In-Series Nickname: Stefanie is sometimes called "Estefanía".
- Instantly Proven Wrong: In one scene, Alma notes the nice weather. Cue Pepa.
- Literal-Minded: Antonio takes Julieta's "soothing the internal storm" comment to mean that Bruno literally has a storm in his stomach.
- Named by the Adaptation: Bruno's three rats are given the names Miguel, Lola, and Queso.
- Power Incontinence: The crux of the fic; when Bruno is very ill, rather than proper visions, he gets attacks of frightening, but ultimately meaningless imagery, described as a visual seizure.
- Sick Episode: For Bruno.
- Two Guys and a Girl: Within the three rats, there are two boy rats, Miguel and Queso, and one girl, Lola.
- Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Sierra is shown to be very averse to vomit.
