Tropes for the film:

  • As Long as It Sounds Foreign: There is a Basque character named Hiztegi Argitaletxea Sarrionandia (but they can call him "Izzy"). His name is a genuine Basque for "Dictionary of the Sarrionandia Publishing House".
  • Berserk Button: Once Lily realizes that Rachel told the truth about Arnold molesting her, she demands that Arnold pull over, gets out of the car, and walks away from him in silent shock and disgust. But then Arnold dares to claim that Rachel, who was only 12 at the time, seduced him. This snaps Lily out of it and sends her into a rage.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: When Arnold tells Lily that Rachel can have his Ferrari, she remembers Rachel telling her how Arnold had bought her a Mustang to keep quiet about him molesting her, and realizes that her daughter was telling the truth all along.
  • Kindly Vet: The vet is so kind that he's the only one who can resist sleeping with Rachel. It Makes Sense in Context. Sorta.
  • Mama Bear: Georgia is more of a Grandma Bear. She immediately believes Rachel when she admits that Arnold molested her when she was 12, and is openly hostile to Arnold from that point onward. She also calls out Lily when she takes Arnold's word over her own daughter's.
    • Once Lily realizes that Rachel told the truth, she attacks Arnold in a rage for what he did.
  • Never My Fault: Arnold. Dear God, Arnold. He never once admits fault in molesting Rachel when she was a child. He uses Lily's alcoholism as an excuse and even has the nerve to claim that Rachel, a 12-year-old girl at the time, not only seduced him but enjoyed it.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: It gets outright literal. Mormon Harlan gets to Georgia's house to fetch her granddaughter, Rachel (who performed oral sex on him on a canoe) to convince her to get his actual girlfriend together with him to release him for his sins. When Rachel yells at him that it wasn't a big deal, but just a blowjob and Georgia comes into the scene in a severely shocked manner, Rachel just responds with "no good deed goes unpunished".
  • Tagline: "In this family, attitude doesn't skip a generation".
