Rajs Rule For The Bathroom At School

  • ️Sun Sep 08 2024

Raj's Rule (for the Bathroom at School) is a children's book by Lana Button.

It follows a young boy who appears to be of kindergarten or first grade age, named Raj, who has a self-imposed "rule" against using his school's bathrooms and shares tips to the readers on how to follow said rule. However, he eventually has to break it and finds that maybe his rule wasn't for the best.

Raj's Rule (for the Bathroom at School) provides examples of:

  • Alliterative Title: The title is alliterative if not counting the part in parentheses.
  • Ambiguously Brown: Raj is illustrated with light brown skin, but his ethnicity is not touched on (though he could be of Indian descent, since "Raj" is a Hindi name).
  • Artistic License – Biology: What forces Raj to break his rule is sneezing. Sneezing doesn't make you need to pee; the closest is that it can cause bladder leakage in those who have weakened pelvic muscles (but weakened pelvic muscles are uncommon in little boys so it's doubtful Raj had them, and he didn't wet his pants; he just had to use the bathroom).
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Raj narrates the story to the audience.
  • Class Clown: Kyle is described as the funny boy of Raj's class and is commonly seen pulling faces and doing goofy dances.
  • Inevitably Broken Rule: Raj has a self-imposed rule against using his school's bathrooms, but eventually he has no choice but to use the bathroom at school anyway.
  • No Full Name Given: Raj and Kyle's last names are unspoken.
  • Potty Dance: At one point, Raj advises to sit with "your knees in a knot", to "squeeze your knees tight", and to "dance if you're desperate" to avoid using the bathroom.
  • Potty Emergency: Eventually, Raj becomes too desperate to wait and is forced to break his rule and use the school's bathroom.
  • Potty Failure: Defied when Raj avoids Kyle whenever he has to pee, since he is funny, so Raj fears that Kyle would make him laugh so hard he wets his pants.
  • Potty Procrastination: The eponymous rule is not to use the bathroom at school, which naturally results in Raj needing to use it but waiting until he gets home.
  • Rhyming Title: Raj's Rule (for the Bathroom at School).
  • Subverted Rhyme Every Occasion: At one point, Raj says, "Steer clear of Kyle. He's too funny, trust me. That guy gets you laughing so hard you might..." and then trails off (the last word is implied to be "pee").
  • Unnamed Parent: Raj's mother makes an appearance at the end, but since he's the one narrating, she's only referred to as "Mom".
