"Monkey and the cat" is one of Aesop's Fables.
Once upon a time there were a cat and a monkey owned by a human. One day they were sitting next to some chestnuts roasting in the fire. The monkey promised to share the chestnuts if the cat manages to get them out. The cat carefully stretched its paw out and quickly drew out a few chestnuts. The cat repeated the action to get more, each time singeing its paw. But as fast as the cat pulled the nuts out, the monkey ate them up. Then their human owner came in to see the two thieves and chased them out. The cat burnt its paw, but earned no chestnuts.
Tropes:
- Interspecies Friendship: The cat and monkey form a good friendship and spend time together. Though, it is questionable how their friendship holds after the monkey broke its promise to share the chestnuts with the cat.
- Minimalist Cast: The monkey, cat and their human owner are the only characters in this tale.
- Nameless Narrative: No one is named in this tale.
- The Noun and the Noun: It is called "monkey and the cat".
