The Legend of Zelda

The Legend of Zelda is a 1986 game released by Nintendo for the NES. Based on co-creator Shigeru Miyamoto's childhood adventures in the Japanese countryside, The Legend of Zelda sought to take audiences on a fantasy journey through the kingdom of Hyrule. The player controls Link, a young hero who sets out on a quest to rescue the titular Princess Zelda and put a stop to the evil plans of a demonic warlord named Ganon. The game places a heavy focus on both simple sword combat and exploration, both of which are bolstered by the dungeons, a set of nine underground mazes structures filled with tough enemies and navigational puzzles. While there is a suggested dungeon order, the game is almost entirely nonlinear, allowing players to go wherever they please and complete the game however they see fit, creating a sense of freedom that was unparalleled in video games at the time. While The Legend of Zelda may not have been the first action-adventure game, it is certainly the most influential and the one that set the standard for nearly every title in its genre for decades to come.
