Discretion Shot - TV Tropes
- ️Thu Jun 14 2007
When something is implied to occur in a scene, but the audience is not shown what exactly transpires. Some things are just better left to the audience's imagination.
Subtropes include:
- Abuse Discretion Shot: Abuse is hinted at, but not fully shown.
- Battle Discretion Shot: When a fight occurs, the scene immediately cuts to the aftermath of the brawl.
- Censored Child Death: The work openly establishes that children can die, but never shows children getting killed on-screen.
- Dead-Hand Shot: Showing a character's hand to indicate that the person has died.
- Dead Hat Shot: Showing a character's discarded hat to indicate that the person has died.
- Dying Object Drop Shot: Showing a dropped object falling to the ground to indicate that the person carrying it has died.
- Funeral Cut: Cutting to the scene of a character's funeral or gravestone instead of explicitly showing their death.
- Gory Discretion Shot: During particularly grisly scenes, the gruesome violence happens off-screen.
- Hit Flash: A white flash is repeatedly shown during fight scenes to avoid actually showing the characters exchange beatings.
- Kissing Discretion Shot: The scene cuts away when two characters are about to kiss.
- Rape Discretion Shot: The scene cuts away when a character is about to get raped.
- Relax-o-Vision: Replacing disturbing scenes by briefly cutting to a more harmless and serene scene.
- Scream Discretion Shot: We don't see what happened to the victim, but we do hear the screams of the victim.
- Sexy Discretion Shot: The scene cuts away when two characters are about to have sex.
- Shadow Discretion Shot: We only see the shadows of what's going on.
- Sound-Only Death: When a character dies, we only hear the violence rather than see it.
- Transformation Discretion Shot: A transformation is obscured by editing, camera angles, or visual effects.
- Villainy Discretion Shot: Hinting at a villain being exceptionally vile without actually showing them doing anything too heinous.
- Vomit Discretion Shot: When a character is about to puke, they rush off-screen so we don't have to actually see them hork.
- Vomit Indiscretion Shot: A character throws up and we actually get to see them vomit on-screen.
