As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic vermin.

• Ah! My Goddess: Happens to Skuld when she wakes up in the morning (due to the failure of the Yggdrasil system) turned into an adult much to her shock (and delight).
• Inside Mari: Loser Protagonist Isao Komori wakes up in the body of school idol Mari Yosikawa with no idea how he got there and sets out to determine if it is a "Freaky Friday" Flip or a Grand Theft Me. The truth turns out to be both more prosaic and more appalling. He's a Split Personality, spawned off when Mari fell in love with a socially outcast female classmate and couldn't reconcile it with the pressure of keeping up appearances.
• Nyotai-ka: Frustrated Dogged Nice Guy turned Internet G.I.R.L. Makoto wakes up female after a goddess turns him into an actual girl to teach him a lesson.
• RuriDragon begins with Ruri waking up one morning to discover she's grown a pair of horns overnight. Very confused, she shows them to her mom, who offhandedly reveals that her father was a dragon.

• FoxTrot: A story arc parodying The Metamorphosis features a sequence like this after Jason turns into a girl.

• Ascend (xTSGx): As said in Chapter Two, this is the cause of Twilight's alicornification:

  "All I know is that, after I finished chapter seven of A Troper's Guide To: Clichés, I went to sleep and woke up with a pair of wings."

• The Discworld as reimagined by A.A. Pessimal has a sort of Noodle Incident reference to a man possibly called Franz, who unwisely annoyed a Witch from the Discworld's version of Czechia or perhaps Slovakia. He went to bed human and woke up in the form of an enormous cockroach.
• Dragon Boy: Jermaine wakes up transformed into a dragon on his thirteenth birthday.
• FAITH (Miyatoriaka) starts with Misty going to sleep one night and waking up in a forest the next day as a Pikachu.
• The Hidden Dawn is a My Hero Academia AU fic that has the main characters being among the first generation to develop quirks. Chapter 2 has several scenes of the teens waking up with mutations and freaking out (to varying degrees) over them: Tsuyu's frog tongue, Kyoka's earphone jacks, Eijiro's shark teeth and Mina's arm and most of her torso turning pink. It's also implied that Ochako's Zero Gravity has been activating in her sleep. Then there's the lightning bolt in Denki's hair, though he doesn't notice that until he's already at school.
• My Little Marriage Mary Is A Mare has the titular (human) character experience this case twice. First, her hair changes into a blue-white pattern. Second, she finds her body as that of a colorful, cartoonish pony.
• In Chapter 36 of Pokémon Reset Bloodlines, Ash's Servine wakes up at Oak's ranch and discovers that she evolved to Serperior in the aftermath of the Saffron Gym battle. She's not happy about it, when she discovers that her evolution caused her to lose her arms.

• Shrek 2: After Shrek and Donkey drink the "Happily Ever After" potion, they pass out and wake up the next morning as a human and a horse, respectively. Fiona also wakes up as a human, with no idea why. No clue on what Dragon turned into.
• In Turning Red, after a Nightmare Sequence, Mei wakes up as a giant red panda the next morning, but she doesn't realize it until she looks in the bathroom mirror.

• Big, when Josh first becomes an adult.
• Bruce Almighty: Grace Connelly, girlfriend of the title character, says to her boyfriend, while he eats the breast beckfast ever, that she woke up that morning and felt like her boobs were bigger. Considering her boyfriend had God's powers at the time, they were.
• Freaky Friday (2003), after the characters switch bodies.
• In Watermelon Man, a white bigot wakes up one morning as... guess what color?

• In the Animorphs book The Familiar, Jake wakes up as an adult in a Bad Future.
• Elantris begins with Raoden waking up and feeling weird, only for his servant to run away screaming and the man himself looking in the mirror and discovering that he's turned into an Elantrian.
• The origin of George Shrinks in the original book. In the animated series, it's implied that he was born tiny.
• In The Girl from the Miracles District, the magic surges that turn people into monsters seem to be more attracted to sleeping people, often resulting in this.
• In Imogene's Antlers, the titular character wakes up one day with antlers growing from her head and she and her family have to spend the whole day getting used to them. When she wakes up the next day, her antlers are gone... but she now has a peacock tail!
• About halfway through "Insect Inside", Jermaine wakes up transformed into an insect monster.
• The 1980 children's book Louis the Fish by Arthur Yorinks (a book once featured on Reading Rainbow) is an unusual case where the eponymous human butcher's metamorphosis occurs at the tail-end of the story rather than the beginning of it; suddenly waking up as a giant salmon one morning after having a series of fish and meat-related hallucinations throughout the story. Given that Louis hated his life before said transformation, though (having lived an unpleasant life under his overbearing parents and forced into the butchery business against his will by them, of which his only escape from was studying and drawing fish), he welcomes this change with open arms (er, fins) and gladly lives on a fish.
• The codifying example is probably Gregor Samsa in The Metamorphosis, who wakes up one morning transformed into a giant insect.
• In Orlando: A Biography, the title character's Gender Bender takes place in just such a way, with the notable difference that she is not in the slightest perturbed by it.
• Things Not Seen is about a teenage boy who inexplicably wakes up invisible one day. He actually doesn't notice until he's taken a shower in the dark and then looks in the mirror, at which point he returns to bed on the assumption that he's dreaming.
• Whateley Universe:
  • This may occur to newly-emerged Mutants, depending on the speed with which they manifest.
  • An almost daily occurrence for some shapeshifters; for example, while Jimmy T. has full control of his powers while awake, he shifts uncontrollably most nights depending on his dreams, his state of mind, etc.
  • Non-mutant student Hat Trick found a Power Crystal which communicated with him in his dreams; it offered to grant him any wish he chose. He chose "to be cool, and the opposite of myself", which proved to ill-advised. He awoke to find himself turned into a beautiful African-American girl with the ability to do amazingly impressive things - but only when others are watching (because it isn't 'cool' if there is no one around to be impressed). Oh, and the crystal shard was now embedded in her chest.
• The Worst Witch: Mildred is suddenly woken by the sound of her bedroom door being slammed; to the discovery that her tabby cat has grown to the size of a mammoth, everything is her room is much bigger than usual, and she has amazing jumping powers. She then sees in the mirror that she has been turned into a frog.

• Are You Afraid of the Dark?: The main character in "The Tale of the Hunted" rolls out of bed one morning as a wolf.
• The Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode "A New Man" has this happen to Giles when he gets turned into a demon by Ethan Rayne.
• The Prisoner (1967): In "The Schizoid Man", Number Six wakes up to find himself with a new appearance. He is greeted as "Number Twelve" and given the assignment of impersonating Number Six (who has been replaced with an actual impersonator) as part of Number Two's latest head-gaming scheme.
• Quantum Leap: In the first episode, Sam wakes up in someone else's body. It's something he's going to have to get used to.
• Star Trek:
  • The Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Face of the Enemy" opens with Counselor Troi getting out of bed to find that she's unaccountably become a Romulan.
  • Similarly, the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode "Second Skin" sees Major Kira wake up to find that she's a Cardassian.
  • Season 2 of Star Trek: Picard has Seven of Nine rolling out of bed to discover that she's (a) completely human and (b) President of a human supremacist space empire.

• The King Missile song "Detachable Penis" starts with the lead singer waking up to realize that his penis has disappeared. However, this a surprise for the audience, not for him: It's soon revealed that he can remove it at will and occasionally misplaces it.

• In A Midsummer Night's Dream, the clown Bottom wakes up with a donkey head. He doesn't seem to notice in the slightest, and if he does, he takes it surprisingly well.

• In the world of ARMS, it's apparently possible to wake up one morning with Extendable Arms that you can use to fight in the eponymous tournaments with, which is the case for many of the playable characters. Why? How? Even in-universe, no one is sure and just cites this trope as the reason.

  Spring Man: I was shocked at first, but having arms like this is actually pretty rad.

• In Hometown Story, the village sentient scarecrow remembers being transformed into a scarecrow from something else. Once his initial form is revealed, he goes more into detail about how it happened and the story includes this trope.
• Pokémon:
  • The Pokédex entry for Kadabra in FireRed states: "It happened one morning — a boy with extrasensory powers awoke in bed transformed into Kadabra."
  • The first two Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games start off with the main character, waking up in another world, having turned into a Pokémon, yet with total amnesia. All s/he knows is that s/he was a human before. This is averted in Gates to Infinity, in which the character falls into the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon world from the sky.
• The Secret World begins with your character waking up after they swallowed a bee. When they reach for their jacket, they accidentally set it on spirit fire. For the next few weeks their life is a traumatizing hell, with no idea why they suddenly have this wild, room-shaking power forced onto them, until they train themselves to control it, at which point one of three ancient conspiracies hires them in exchange for telling them everything - or just beat them up and monologue the instruction manual in tangent koans.
• In Them's Fightin' Herds's Book of Lore, Oleander the Unicorn says the trope name almost exactly when she tries to explain why her normally pure white coat has turned dark, outing her as a user of forbidden Dark Magic.

• The plot of Avialae starts with Gannet freaking out about waking up one day to find that wings have begun bloodily growing out of his back.
• Things get interesting in Cat Nine when Keith gets home and sees his cat transformed into a cat girl. She's not even aware of her body until pointed out.
• Elliot of El Goonish Shive first experiences his Power Incontinence in this fashion, and later discovers his superheroine form in the same manner.
• Thus begins the many woes and complications in the life of Marion Wheeler of Housepets!, who wakes up one day to find he has mysteriously transformed into a squirrel. His attempts to solve his mystery lead him to meet fellow transformees from earlier in this comic, and form the driving force of his story.
• Misfile starts with Ash waking up with breasts that weren't there yesterday.
• In Steel City Moon, the protagonist's transformations into a Wolf Man always seem to occur while he's asleep. At least after the first time he knows that it's coming.

• This is a surprisingly common form of transformation fetish on art hosting websites such as DeviantArt, with fictional (or photoshopped) characters waking up only to realize in shock they now have a mermaid tail or whatever else. As popular is the version with characters just accepting the change and going on their lives as usual, only to face Operator Incompatibility later on.

• Avatar: The Last Airbender: Zuko allows Aang's bison Appa to go free and seems set up for a Heel–Face Turn. In "The Earth King", his body suffers a dramatic fever in the process; after collapsing and spending days in bed, he wakes up, goes to the mirror, and discovers his scar gone, his hair shaven and covered in air-bending tattoos. It's just a nightmare, but the initial shock is in the spirit of this trope.
• In one Codename: Kids Next Door episode, Nigel wakes up as an adult in a future where he is the evil President of the United States, the other former members of Sector V, except for Abigail, are evil too, and the new members of Sector V are their kids. It turns out to be All Just a Dream. He wakes up again during The Stinger and is telling the others about the experience, only for the "camera" to turn and reveal that he has now turned into a girl.
• The premise of Gary the Rat is that an Amoral Attorney wakes up transformed into a rat-man.
• This is the premise behind Martin Morning. Once per Episode, the title character wakes up in his bed in the morning to find himself turned into something abnormal (or at least abnormal for an elementary schooler) and is forced to go through his day like that. He's woken up as a wizard, a pharaoh, a vampire, a private detective, a king, and many more.
