Re Boot S 2 E 5 Painted Windows - TV Tropes

  • ️Wed Nov 25 2020

Hexadecimal steals the Paint program from the Principle Office, and starts to use Mainframe as the canvas for her twisted art. Now Bob has to undo Hexadecimal's work before the next cycle, or the changes she's made will be permanent!

This episode has examples of:

  • Art Initiates Life: Using the Paint program allows Hexadecimal use a Vid Window display as a canvas, which causes her drawings to become real in part of the world she just painted on.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Frisket saves Dot from a nasty fall.
  • The Blank: It's revealed that Hexadecimal has no face beneath her mask, just a void from which energy would pour uncontrolled.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: Hexadecimal screams "WHAT?!" when Mike announces a program about Al's Diner.
  • Description Cut: Dot expresses certainty that Bob would never go to meet Hexadecimal without a really good plan. Then at her lair:

    Mike: That's your whole plan?!
    Bob: Yep.
Mike: And neither of us are expected to survive?!
    Bob: That's right.
Mike: [putting on a cowboy hat] Well, that's not much of a plan, is it, pilgrim?

  • The End... Or Is It?: Hexadecimal seems completely out of it, but then she briefly sports a Slasher Smile before the episode-ending Smash to Black.
  • Epic Hail: With the link to the paint program cut off before Bob can fix the mistake he's made, he resorts to calling on Glitch to return, to which it does, racing from where it was lost on the other side of Mainframe at high speed.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • One of the Binome CPU guards at the archive says he's heard stories about the Web invading systems.
    • Bob leaves Mike with Hexadecimal. This will have consequences.
  • Got Volunteered: Bob's plan involves roping Mike the TV into all this.
  • Mad Artist: The whole reason for Hexadecimal's wrecking Mainframe with the paint program is so the system's inhabitants will appreciate her "talent" as an artist. When Bob and Mike arrive at her lair on the pretense of interviewing her, she's pleased to finally be getting the recognition she deserves.
  • No Face Under the Mask: When Hexadecimal tries to attack Bob, he quickly uses the Paint program to remove her mask, revealing nothing but an empty hole underneath from which all her power surges out.
  • Off with His Head!: Before Phong can deliver crucial information on how to stop Hex's scheme, she uses the paint program to erase his head and replace it with an apple. She then cut and pastes him into the sky for good measure.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business:
    • Hexadecimal takes out Megabyte, Phong, Glitch, communications, and transportation. As Bob says, it's like she's working from a plan for once.
    • Hex, or rather her masks, make a sincere plea to Bob to save her by putting her mask back on and give him a genuine thank you when he does. When her mask is back in place, Hex is reduced to a Troubled Fetal Position, completely silent.
  • "Psycho" Strings: Mike imitates these as he tries to get Hexadecimal back to her old self.
  • Race Against the Clock: Phong tells Bob that the damages Hexadecimal is causing will become permanent in the next scheduled system backup. Bob needs to undo Hex's work before that can happen.
  • Reality Is Out to Lunch: The natural outcome of Hexadecimal changing Mainframe to suit her whims.
  • Reality Warper: Hexadecimal's control of the Paint program basically gives her this ability at will.
  • Save the Villain: When Bob removes Hexadecimal's mask, her power runs out of control, threatening to destroy her (and likely more than that). He scrambles to put her mask back, earning her sincere gratitude.
  • Say My Name: Megabyte shouts Hexadecimal's name after she "cheered up" the Tor by turning it into a giant vase of flowers. He tries to say Hexadecimal's name a second time after having his face stretched before she paints a gag smile on his face
  • Shout-Out:
  • Sistine Steal: One of these adorns the outside of the Principal Office once Hexadecimal is done with it.
  • Villainous RRoD: When Bob removes Hexadecimal's mask, her power starts going out of control. Even when Bob returns it, Hex is too tired to do anything but lie prone on the floor.
  • You Fool!: As Hexadecimal overloads, one of the masks shouts this at Bob.
