Darby The Dragon - TV Tropes

Darby the Dragon is a 1996 Edutainment Game set in a kingdom named Dragondale. The story focuses on a young dragon named Darby who finds a magic wand, which he decides to show his older sister, Sparkle. When they both get into a scuffle over the wand, Darby wishes that Sparkle was smaller than him, causing her to shrink. Darby must now go on an epic journey to find the ingredients for a potion that will turn his sister back to her normal size.

Tropes include:

• Be Careful What You Wish For: When Darby and Sparkle get into a tussle over the magic wand, Darby wishes that Sparkle was smaller. Almost immediately after he says this, the wand causes Sparkle to shrink.
• Brother–Sister Team: While they do have a bit of a rivalry at times, as siblings usually do, both Darby and Sparkle care for each other.
• Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Darby and Sparkle's parents are the king and queen of Dragondale, but everyone just refers to them as "King" and "Queen". The user guide reveals that the Queen's name is Madra, but the King's name is not mentioned at all.
• Follow the Bouncing Ball: In the library, you can choose one of three stories that the Queen will read to you. As she reads them, the words are highlighted.
• I've Never Seen Anything Like This Before: Darby says this when he finds the magic wand.
• Image Song: Darby is introduced with one of these.

• Incredible Shrinking Man: At the beginning of the game, Sparkle is shrunken down to a third of her original size and Darby must now find a way to return her to her original size.
• Inexplicable Treasure Chests: There are a number of these throughout Dragondale, with each one containing a gold coin.
• Magic Wand: The plot kicks off when Darby finds one of these in the mountains. When he decides to show it to Sparkle, they both get into a fight over it, then Darby wishes that Sparkle was smaller, causing her to shrink. Unfortunately, he cannot use it to wish Sparkle back to her normal size.

• Vile Vulture: In the desert, Darby and Sparkle encounter a trio of vultures who express a desire to eat them. Thankfully, they don't.
