Rise Up, Sing Out (Western Animation)

Rise Up, Sing Out is a Disney Junior musical shorts show created by Latoya Ravenau that came out on February 2, 2022. The show focuses on a group of kids who sing songs about teaching ethnic diversity and celebrating each other's differences. Early in January 2025, it was unexpectedly announced on Instagram that season 2 would be coming on January 24.

Tropes Associated With The Show:

  • Animated Musical: The series definitely embraces this with how every topic covered in each episode is through a music video.
  • As Himself:
    • "Let's Go" features a guest appearance from the Linda Lindas.
    • Simu Liu guest stars as himself in "Lunar New Year".
  • Bespectacled Cutie: So-Hyeon's cousin Semi wears glasses, and looks cute.
  • Braids of Action: Amelia has braided hair, which fits with how she's the most sporty, action oriented of the kids.
  • Company Cross-References: In "Let's Go", one of Semi's posters shows Anne and Sprig.
  • Creator Cameo: Ahmir Thompson and Tariq Trotter, who are the executive music producers on the show, cameo as themselves in a few episodes.
  • Darker and Edgier: While the show is overall lighthearted and optimistic, it's not afraid to tackle subject manner rarely talked about in preschool shows. A good example comes from "I'll Be There", a song dealing with the aftereffects of bad news (which isn't shown onscreen, only mentioned, but still pretty heavy when talked about).
  • Edutainment Show: The aim of the show is to teach kids topics about diversity and inclusion, and how to be there for others.
  • Five-Token Band: The main kid characters on the show are black (Taniya, Kingston, Rogernequia, Shawna), Hispanic (Gabriel), half black and half Korean (So-Hyeon), and white (Amelia and Hannah).
  • Girlish Pigtails: Both Taniya and Amelia have braided pigtails.
  • Happily Adopted: We briefly see at the end of "Gather Round" that Amelia has 2 mothers, who don't speak, but seem nice enough.
  • Innocently Insensitive: The episode "Speak Up" definitely shows this. While characters like Hannah and Adam aren't being mean on purpose, they do inadvertently say micro aggressions about how some of the characters don't look or sound black enough. Fortunately, a little help from Taniya helps them see that they should apologize.
  • Nice Girl & Nice Guy: All the characters, both girls and boys, are pretty friendly towards each other and try to help each other out.
  • Slumber Party: "Super Bonnet" takes place during a sleepover, where Taniya and her friends educate Amelia on bonnets.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: Amelia is really into sports, but she's also fond of having slumber parties with her friends.
  • Token White: Amelia is the only one within Taniya's immediate circle of friends who's white.
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: Taniya definitely shows how she's a young girl who's very mature and educates her friends on things they don't know.
